The Swiss firm, Laufen Bathrooms, produces a full range of bathroom sanitaryware and tap units, besides dealing in bathroom furniture and accessories. Laufen’s experience is seen on two fronts: manufacturing know-how, and research into function and form via close liaison with designers and architects. They are continually delving into the potential of sanitaryware and pursuing cutting-edge projects. Their commitment to eco-friendly manufacturing is shown by the careful use they make of energy and materials at all stages of the production cycle, from planning-board to marketing.
To display their product range to architects and private customers, Laufen have extended their company HQ by a visitors centre, the Laufen Forum, whose architectural shape itself hints at the solid tradition of ceramics. The two-storey building, designed by Nissen & Wentzlaff, is a monolithic-looking mass of architectural concrete, a scaled replica of one of Laufen’s own washbasins. The visitors’ route takes them up to the permanent bathroom exhibition on the upper floor where they have a chance to try out baths for themselves in three test set-ups. Other display niches line the outside walls at eye level.
A minimalist design approach aims throughout to use the building as a foil for display upon which Laufen bathrooms are the star performers.
