Italian Ceramics: Artisanal Appeal and Industrial Technology

Resistant, versatile, durable and healthy, ceramics are a widely-used decorative material with a long tradition in Italy. Ceramics are particularly popular in the contract sector for how they combine the appeal of an artisanal product with industrial technology performance. Indoors, ceramics are generally used as flooring and wall coverings to create an elegant and welcoming atmosphere. An example is the en-suite bathrooms and rooftop spa at the Mari Pop Hotel at Ried im Zillertal, Austria, which was enlivened by the Palladian design of the “I Cocci” collection by Fioranese. Ceramics are also used outdoors, as a solution to foster design continuity across a project: for example, in the new rooms at the Corte San Ruffillo farmhouse in Dovadola, near Forlì, where the Square collection by Cercom was chosen in a Grey Rock color, or at QC Terme Dolomiti in Val di Fassa, which was clad using the Pietra di Bagnolo variant of Ceramiche Keope’s In&Out Percorsi Smart line.

At wellness centers, ceramics are a fine way to comply with technical necessities without sacrificing the appeal of marble surfaces. This was the case at the Klab Prato spa in Tuscany, clad using fine porcelain stoneware slabs from Casalgrande Padana’s Marmoker line, available in a variety of types to cater to different environments. Ceramics feature at the Grand Hotel di Castrocaro’s Lucia Magnani Health Clinic, where the bush-hammered finish of Laminam’s thin slabs, with chromatic variations from Bianco Lasa to Noir Desir, plays a starring role. The spa at the Grand Hotel San Pietro in Taormina was refurbished in almost “total white”, using the Statuario, Lasa, Frappuccino and Saint Laurent variants of the Marazzi Allmarble collection. The more rustic evocations of marble were preferred to the stone’s luxurious aspect for the Bogogno Golf Club Resort & Spa on Lake Maggiore, which Italgraniti clad in its Stone Plan lines, inspired by Alpine and Apennine stone, and Sands Experience, redolent of sedimentary rock and sandstone. With its slate-like look, the Dark Flow color from the Waterfall collection by Lea Ceramiche was chosen for the spa at the Hotel Milla Montis in Val Pusteria.

The endless colors, formats and texture options of ceramics are on show at Cersaie 2021, scheduled for late September in Bologna. The event features an exclusive space - the Contract Hall - for producers, designers and clients to meet. This space is located in the Archincont(r)act piazza, which will be hosting ten internationally-renowned architectural firms.
