A Victorian House between history and innovation

The project rewrites the Victorian language for a terraced house in a historic area in North London

A Victorian House between history and innovation
By Editorial Staff -

LLI Design have recently completed the refurbishment of a Victorian house in the historic Highgate Hill area, a residential area in North London where traditional terraced houses enjoy wonderful views over the city. The townhouse required a modernization of the interiors, while maintaining a historical appearance on the outside. The London-based studio has managed to maintain original Victorian esthetic, yet introducing contemporary features in the design such as open, multifunctional spaces and integrating a digital audio-visual system. For this project the studio was commended with an award in the Residential Interior Private Residence London category of the United Kingdom Property Awards in association with Rolls Royce.

The tall and narrow property covers an area of 260 sq. m spread over five levels. At the ground floor, an open space living room runs through the entire length of the building and opens onto the private garden by a large window. The mezzanine floor has been completely reconfigured and transformed into an open space that leads to a new glazed conservatory: here the light that enters illuminates the entire story and allows the view of the internal greenery.

The master bedroom, upstairs, painted with calm and soft tones, is the synthesis of the combination of classic and modern elements. For example, the glass droplet chandelier hangs from a vintage ceiling rose or the clear acrylic handles on the traditionally styled wardrobes. Eclecticism is leading the design in the bathroom as well: the grey lacquered wooden cabinet has been revisited in a modern key with the addition of the same clear acrylic handles as the walk-in closet and the Statuario marble for the walls and floors that emphasizes the original architectural elements such as traditional sanitary ware and sash windows.

The second floor, now dedicated to the kids, features bright rooms and simple furnishes with a functional style but it is customized with colorful elements such as a floor-to-ceiling climbing wall and a world map wallpaper. For the third and top floor, converted into an office, LLI Design have chosen leather and metal furniture, surrounded by bespoke dark blue wooden cabinets, in order to give the room a serious and industrial appearance.

In this project, the original elements, maintained and restored – such as shutters, dado rails and covings – coexist harmoniously with technological appliances. The building features a complete range of audiovisual and home automation technologies that can be managed though a platform that allows the control of all systems by design-integrated tablets, remote controllers and smartphones. To maintain the balance of this heterogeneity, the construction, joinery, home automation and landscaping were all supervised by LLI Design.
