Design continues to grow more sustainable
By Editorial Staff -

The concept of design has changed. Companies not only need to create beautiful products but also respect sustainability in every sense of the word.

Flos B&B Italia Group has embraced this philosophy, implementing a product design process that reduces environmental impact, preserves artisanal traditions, and respects people.

Together, these three pillars underpin the development of the new collections from the group’s brands, which include big names in Italian and Scandinavian design such as Flos, B&B Italia, Maxalto, Arclinea, and Louis Poulsen.

The ethics of sustainability: planet, people, culture

Sustainability is often seen as simply having respect for the environment. B&B Italia Group, however, embraces a broader vision, in which its brands share an ethical approach that centers on beauty, craftsmanship, innovation, quality, and sustainability. The group’s sustainability strategy is based on three pillars:

  •              Design for the planet: The group is committed to environmental sustainability, its approach bringing together innovation, eco-design, and circularity.
  •               Design for people: People matter – both consumers and staff – and are increasingly conscious of making ethical and responsible choices. The group aims to create a workplace that ensures equity and inclusion, while generating value for communities around the world.
  •              Design for culture: The group grows its identity by preserving the craftsmanship and heritage of design, beginning with scientific research through to safeguarding the legacy of design.

Sustainability for the planet: a concrete commitment

The first pillar of Flos B&B Italia Group’s strategy is commitment to the planet. This takes the form of an ongoing work to minimizing the environmental impact of every step in the supply chain. From raw materials to production, logistics, and the use of the product, each step must be as sustainable as possible.

The group embraces the principles of eco-design, creating products that minimize the use of resources and promote recycling. This involves working with eco-friendly materials as well as rethinking the entire life cycle of products to promote circularity.

A good example is its Arclinea kitchens, which are made using FSC-certified timber.

Efficient manufacturing

Flos B&B Italia Group’s commitment goes beyond careful selection of materials, with it working to minimize environmental impact by reducing emissions and adopting rigorous standards for:

  • reducing raw materials waste
  • avoiding the use of polluting chemicals
  • improving waste management
  • improving packaging processes

The group is therefore working to comprehensively reduce its environmental footprint, beginning with the better use of materials – already selected for their origins and quality – to reduce pollution. Attention to this aspect then extends to the optimal management of the entire life of its products, from design to packaging.
