Borgo Hermada: a residential village poised between yesterday and today

A 20th-century former convent, a prestigious historical villa, and a new construction with contemporary style comprise a single residential village in the foothills near Turin. Created by interweaving innovative living ideas, historical identity and memory, and significant natural landscape, Borgo Hermada is a residential complex with extensive grounds that has successfully retained its original architectural value while enhancing it for the present day through the functional integration of all its different spaces.

Designed by + Studio Architetti together with Mediapolis Engineering and TRA Architetti, the development comprises three different buildings linked by pedestrian paths. Built in the 20th century, Palazzo Redentore is a former convent that has been repurposed to create 20 apartments of different sizes with different exposures (street or garden) and common areas at ground level. Villa Angelica, the oldest building on the site, has been renovated and divided into eight apartments. The new building, designed specifically for the village, comprises two villas with four apartments. These open onto the garden at ground level with terraces on the floors above.

Ceramiche Keope played an important role in the renovation of Palazzo Redentore, supplying porcelain stoneware floor tiles – with either a stone or concrete effect, depending on the area – as well as stone pavers for the outdoor spaces.

The aesthetic value of the stone and the modern edge of the concrete-effect stoneware creates a synergy with the project’s color palette, which ranges from beige to numerous grays, contributing to defining the strong and contemporary identity of the living space. Inspired by the beauty of the Italian mountains, the gray Dolmix stone-effect decorative stoneware collection was chosen for steps, skirtings, and the floors in some of the common areas.

The stone pavers used for the outdoor walkways are the three variants from the Percorsi Smart series: Pietra di Lavis, Pietra di Bressa, and Pietra di Bagnolo, all of which are 3/4” (20 mm) thick. This versatile collection can express different living styles, from elegant and sophisticated to minimalist and urban.

Ceramiche Keope also supplied Londale Beige cement-effect stoneware slabs, limestone-effect Dunstone Beige slabs, and Swisstone Anthracite stone tiles with their streaked effect. With their ability to combine striking looks and performance, all of these products contributed to communicating the identity of a unique residential development, creating a dialogue between inside and out, and enriching the project with the infinite variations of stone and its elegant textures.

Palazzo Redentore, the work of +studioarchitetti, has a brick base, which defines the building as a strong landmark while also identifying public spaces and the new entrances. All of this helps create a perception of harmony between the different volumes, and between the volumes and their setting, while creating a contemporary look.
