In her interior design of Beach House, a home in Mumbai with sweeping vistas across the Arabian Sea, Shabnam Gupta from The Orange Lane opted for a broad palette of natural colors and materials. With its sophisticated, functional interiors, this is a home that reflects the lifestyle and passions of its owners, while responding to the needs of their family.

Beach House is defined by a natural, earthy palette, accented by personal objects and paintings that bring a touch of eccentricity to the interiors. The artworks, created and chosen by the owners, not only beautify the spaces but also tell a story of shared experiences and memories, giving the home a warmth and individuality.

Numerous indoor plants throughout the home, including a green wall, the attention given to bringing natural light inside, and the use of natural materials all reflect the designer’s commitment to biophilic design as she aimed to establish a deep and beneficial connection with nature.

A walkthrough of the home begins at an entrance-corridor area enclosed by dark metal arches, conceived as a transit area that leads to the interior of the house. The floor has black and white tiles arranged in a checkerboard pattern, while the rough natural stone finish of the walls creates a rustic but cared-for feel.

The first room you enter immediately establishes a warm and elegant mood, underscored by panoramic windows that flood the space with natural light and frame the coastal landscape. The next room you come to is the kitchen. Also lit by large windows, this room is both understated and inviting, with timber furnishings in light tones and a white marble countertop.

The large living area comprises a dining and living room, both with an exposed natural stone wall as a backdrop. Limestone floors, plants, sofas, and a low wooden table on an oriental rug create a welcoming feel, defined by warm, neutral tones.

Just off the living area is a tranquility space with blue walls and light parquetry flooring laid in a herringbone pattern. A blue sofa with red cushions embroidered with Asian-inspired designs completes the space. A carved timber door with geometric motifs leads to the pooja room for meditation, adorned with hand-painted artworks created by the owner in collaboration with a local artist.

In the master bedroom, the light tone of the floor contrasts with dark timber furniture. The walls feature hand-crafted paintings and plates, which lend a color and uniqueness to the space. The en suite bathroom features timber surfaces and an elegant blue marble counter top with light veining.
