Wood is life. It always has been for the Hasslacher family, which founded its namesake company in 1901 – over 120 years ago – and still runs it as a family business. All those years ago, Jakob Hasslacher, great-grandfather of the current owner, Christoph Kulterer, started with a small sawmill, but over time it has grown, through organic development driven by ceaseless innovation, courageous entrepreneurship and strategic acquisitions. Now a group headquartered in Austria, it has become one of Europe’s leading players in timber and one of the world’s market leaders in glulam, standing for pioneering spirit, performance, quality, sustainability and social responsibility. The numbers provide a clear snapshot of this development: a workforce of around 2,000 employees, production sites in multiple European countries and Canada, and a diverse range of products crafted from spruce, fir, larch and pine – sourced exclusively from responsibly managed forests to ensure sustainability.
The company’s catalog includes glulam, solid wood panels, beams, floor elements and CLT, alongside a range of innovative and custom solutions. Among these are X-fix C connectors, designed for interlocking CLT wall and ceiling panels. Their unique split-wedged shape ensures a secure, self-locking fit.
As mentioned, sustainability and concern for the environment are core values of the group’s business, which, in addition to covering raw material management, also focuses on the facilities – with most of the factories equipped with photovoltaic systems – and the innovation trajectory. In 2023, the group made the highly strategic decision to invest in an emerging startup specializing in the development of efficient and safe cycleways made with a high wood component. On the other side of its investments, in 2024, the group decided to acquire a stake in a major mass timber producer in Canada to increase its presence in the North American market.
One of the key projects that the Hasslacher group has been involved in of late is the Silt Hotel, located on the beachfront in Middelkerke, Belgium, an instantly recognizable structure for its striking wooden exoskeleton. Designed by the ZJA, OZ, Delva and Bureau Bouwtechniek architectural practices, the hotel – above a casino – is characterized by its high-performance Accoya modified wood components, engineered for durability in harsh marine conditions. In total, the structure incorporates 155 cubic meters of glulam. Overlooking the sea, the hotel’s shape is inspired by the mooring bollards in the port, creating a structure that defines the building’s identity. It is a place of peace and tranquility, where pristine nature and rolling dunes are never far away – even indoors – thanks to expansive glazing and outdoor walkways sheltered by the same sculptural exoskeleton.
