In the heart of Vancouver, overlooking the ocean and nestled between majestic mountains, a minimalist-style home represents the perfect balance between modern life and untamed nature. This house, designed by interior designer Stephanie Brown, is a tribute to minimalist elegance and contemporary comfort. Located in the quiet and picturesque Point Grey neighborhood, it is an ideal residential area for runners, cyclists, and those who seek an active lifestyle without giving up a relaxed atmosphere.
The owners, a couple in their sixties, desired a smaller home once their children had grown up. Their intention was to create a house that would be comfortable for two people but also suitable for hosting friends and family, easy to maintain without compromising on contemporary style and refinement.
Interior designer Stephanie Brown conceived the interiors as an extension of the surrounding landscape. The neutral tones and natural materials recall the light-toned sandy beaches and gray stones characteristic of Vancouver's coastline. The materials chosen, such as light oak, marble and quartz, also reflect the simplicity and natural beauty of the area, creating a relaxing and timeless environment.
The home has a compact layout and was designed with custom made solutions to make use of every corner. The home features a reverse plan, with the main living spaces being on the third floor to maximize light and panoramic views. From this level, a staircase leads to a rooftop patio, where the owners can enjoy the panoramic views of the city, mountains, and ocean.
The main entrance is on the second level, where are also located the master bedroom with an ensuite bathroom, the guest bedroom and bathroom. On the first level (ground floor), the spaces can be completely locked off and function as an independent suite with its own exterior entrance.
The extensive use of custom millwork allowed the creation of functional and organized spaces, maintaining a minimalist aesthetic free of visual distractions.
The large windows on two sides of the house frame the spectacular views and become the focal point within the space. The calm and bright interior has been designed as as a quiet counterpoint to the external views, creating a balance between dynamism and tranquility. Every superfluous element has been concealed or integrated into the design to maintain the linearity of the ambience.
One example of the meticulous design process is the chandelier above the dining table, a flexible composition that minimizes sight-line interruption. The colored glass sphere work was chosen to complement both the homeowners' art collection and echo the tones of the landscape.
