1440 Sepulveda, the art that redesigns spaces

The works of artist Natalja Kent reflect the colours of the Los Angeles area, from the ocean to the park in front of the building, and the light filtering through the trees and pedestrian paths

Light, colour, and movement are at the core of the redevelopment project for the office building located at 1440 Sepulveda, in the vibrant West Los Angeles neighbourhood. This space, enriched by the artworks of Natalja Kent, a Czech-American artist based in Los Angeles, has become a symbol of urban regeneration through art.

Built in 1986, the original building featured a solid structure but required significant refurbishment to optimise spaces and improve usability. Beacon Capital Partners, the project's developer, collaborated with the architecture firm Ware Malcomb to transform it into a space for the city.

The building, encompassing an area of 10,400 square metres across three levels, currently hosts the production studios of a major sports network, with additional space available.

A distinctive feature of the project is the integration of art into the building’s façade, with an installation created using powder-coated aluminium panels. The result is a vibrant mural that blends harmoniously with the surrounding environment, becoming a visual landmark for the neighbourhood.

When designing the colours of the mural, Natalja Kent drew inspiration from the urban and natural context of West Los Angeles: the nearby Pacific Ocean, the green park in front of the building, the light filtering through the trees, and the pedestrian pathways.1440 Sepulveda ©Jason O’Rear, courtesy of Beacon Capital Partners

The project offers a variety of modular and customisable spaces, all characterised by large windows that enhance the inflow of natural light. The entrance hall welcomes visitors with high ceilings, a lush vertical garden, and additional artworks by the artist, creating an environment filled with creative energy.

A tribute to the Light and Space movement

The project also takes inspiration from the Light and Space Movement, an artistic trend that emerged in California in the late 1960s and early 1970s, paying homage to the city’s rich cultural history. The artworks feature gradients and abstractions that evoke the movement and rhythms of the West LA neighbourhood. Created using analogue materials linked to photography, these pieces seamlessly integrate with the area's cinematic tradition.
