The project born and developed following a research focused on man and the concept of "living". Man, with his needs and habits, becomes a generator of space, an element around which to build living environments. The plan, inscribed within two fences, one outside facing the road and one inside, is divided around four courtyards that, independent, suggest the position and distribution of volumes. The human dimension becomes fundamental: it defines the external space, the rest areas, the internal and external passage zones, and the ideal volume so that each family member can perform their functions and move freely in the environments.
Colour, light and nature: these are the elements that characterize the landscape in which the house stands. The protagonist is the countryside of Val di Noto (RG), a land marked by unspoilt nature and the presence of ancient farmhouses. These, developed around a central courtyard and surrounded by compañeras bordered by dry stone walls, predominate over the entire Hyblaean area. In this land the stone emerges with all its primitive strength and comes in many forms: simple rock, drywall, rural house, terraced tower or majestic baroque monument. The elements of the enclosure and the courtyard, typical of these rural buildings, are reinterpreted and become the compositional principles of the project of a single-family villa surrounded by nature.
The villa stands on a land that extends over three hectares of carob and olive trees, bordered by dry stone walls made with white Modican stone bricks. The project reinterprets the original dry construction typology and the materiality. Blocks of white Modican stone, assembled according to a geometric design, form a grid, a filter, an element that allows to who live inside to look out preventing the opposite. This wall mark defines the domestic space in which the building stands and marks the boundary between residential and agricultural space, giving privacy to the interior spaces and at the same time creating partial visual continuity with the surrounding rural context. The body of the building, consisting of three geometrically pure white volumes of different heights, develops around four courtyards. These are private places, halfway between the interior and the exterior, which is entrusted with the task of establishing a hierarchy between spaces. Each courtyard has independent access so that the building, while maintaining its compactness, is made up of autonomous spaces. The distribution of volumes and glazed spaces ensures proper natural ventilation to the interior, allowing natural light to illuminate the domestic space and create play of light and shadow.
The architectural result corresponds perfectly to what had been thought, thanks to the careful choice of workers, the availability of the client and the meticulous care of the same that immediately loved and participated in the project, making it own. The relationship between architect and client has a decisive importance for the success of a project and this house is proof of this. As Gio Ponti wrote, "love architecture"!
Salvatore Terranova was born in Catania on 2/09/84 and he graduated from the IUAV Faculty of Architecture in Venice. Giorgia Testa was born in Catania on 25/12/84. She graduated from the Faculty of Building Engineering-Architecture in Catania in 2010 and attended the Master’s Degree in Seismic Engineering in Messina, obtaining the specialization in November 2012. After collaborating with well-known architecture and engineering firms, they founded the lineaT studio in the province of Catania in October 2015. The studio has carried out projects in the residential and commercial sector, on a small and large scale, up to the design elements project, with attention to the research of innovative materials and construction techniques. Aware of the importance that architectural study has on the quality of life, works with the aim of triggering a domino effect that leads to a large-scale qualitative development of the territory.
