In the living system of this building, the coffee shop operates only one slice of time, and we have an insight into the sustainable use of the space, how to maximize the preservation of its historical value, while making this commercial space integrated into the garden atmosphere, as the primary issue of the project. The solution we came up with was -- hover. From the design concept to the construction scheme, the functional space is "hovering" on the historical building to avoid excessive attachment and adhesion.

This cafe is located in Suzhou Lingering Garden, one of the four famous gardens in China, which is standard for the fun of Jiangnan gardens and in the long history. And it was called "old one" for some years. We have hot and romantic feelings for the history, for this corner of the park to do the next era of footnotes at the same time, to maximize the preservation of the original building style, to avoid the adhesive design, we will continue to write the possible blank to the later, hoping to share the beauty with visitors of different time and space. When thousands of years of constant sunlight through the bluestone tiles and glass windows, ancient and modern Chinese and Western unique soft charm seems to be in front of this cup of coffee.
The original wooden door of the building is used as an open partition of the independent rest area (this also reduces the artificial push and pull of the wooden door, reducing the loss), and the space is turned into a public space, providing a rest place for tourists and passers-by who have no consumer demand, and will not be embarrassed if they do not go into the store to consume, showing humanistic care. In addition, this area can also be used as a photo card area, bringing intangible business value to the coffee shop.
The circular flexible membrane ceiling is pulled by steel wire rope and supported by steel columns. It is suspended in the air under the roof of the original building. In this way, it not only meets the visual and functional needs, but also maintains an appropriate "boundary sense" with the original building, so that the subsequent demolition or renovation does not "involve" the original roof. In addition, with transparent acrylic ceiling partition, supplemented by supplementary lighting, so that visitors can look up to enjoy the original appearance of the garden characteristics of the roof. The visual interleaving of modern industrial materials and old beams creates multiple viewing sensations. In terms of visual aesthetics, this case uses a wide range of circles and columns, annular ceiling lights in the shape of sun rings, Su-style doorways in the shape of full moon, classic columns of garden corridors, supplemented by bright and simple lines, with distinctive features and harmonious nature. In the guest area, the lighting is combined with the acrylic installation art (the installation is in the shape of a floating object, pointing to the concept of "hovering"), adding visual highlights on the basis of maintaining the unity of materials.
We take multiple social concerns as an important consideration in the design, not only considering the social needs of the coffee space, but also taking into account the needs of "refusing to socialize and enjoying solitude". "e" and "i" share a limited guest space, separated by installation lighting, and the seating orientation is "non-interference". So that customers with diverse needs can freely "hover" in the same space.
