TARANG was born from boundless inspiration & client trust granting us creative freedom. Without structural constraints, our minds flowed like waves of thought, shaping a dynamic ethos. "Tarang," Hindi for waves, reflects our design's fluidity, where ideas seamlessly evolve, forming a landscape distinct from URBAN norms, where BOX-like structures dominated the surroundings. The vision was to craft a cornerless edifice, harmonic waves that defied conventional architectural norms. Tarang aimed to break away from the monotony of its environment. The architect sought to create a structure that not only looks beautiful but also reflects their values and beliefs. Tarang was conceptualized as a dynamic gallery space, interaction for art & culture meticulously designed to adapt & evolve seamlessly

Tarang's design responds to the SOUTH WEST context of the site in response to the hot & arid climate of the Western India. It addresses sustainability challenges creating an environmentally friendly & culturally rich built environment. Without digital tools celebrating the artistry of workers. The undulating form engulfs the space blurring boundaries between walls & enclosure. The edifice's essence lies in the voids and exposed bricks. Inspired from nature's organic shapes the space offers freedom merging with nature as if the built form didn’t exist but was born from the core of the earth itself. Tarang's design is both people-centric & environmentally considerate. The building serves as a valuable asset to society meeting the principles of inclusive design fostering community engagement

The key here is the use of a single Sustainable material Terracotta brick tiles locally made & constructed by local artisans in just 90 days benefiting the local economy & cultural heritage. Reducing transportation emissions & preserves traditional craftsmanship. Using traditional construction techniques & without digital tool the design omits steel & conventional concrete minimizing the building's embodied carbon footprint & reliance on resource-intensive materials. The structure relies on strength & ingenuity of interlocking terracotta bricks & fast-setting mortar to create robust sustainable arch system. This approach aligns with circular economy principles maximizing re-use recycling Disassembling & repurposing the bricks at the end of building's lifecycle reduces environmental impact

The design process was driven by intuition to understand what the space needed to dignify the structure. Conceptual sketches & design development had a purpose, keeping in mind the sun path, air and ventilation, trying to bring nature in. The concept was finalised with three openings (also acting as structural members) for ventilation and controlled Sunlight taking into account the specific context of the South West. This is an ancestral construction technique used to support the ceiling above which permits construction without beams, used to sustain the weight of an arch reducing construction time. Its rising arched interiors are pleasantly intimate & familiar, thanks to its form rooted in a biophilic design approach. The involvement of artisans ensures authentic & high-quality terracotta brick tiles, benefiting the local economy & cultural heritage. Skilled craftspeople with in-depth knowledge of traditional techniques bring expertise to the construction process, infusing the structure with artistry & local identity. The design evokes a sense of continuity & connection that transcends the present moment, encouraging dialogue that spans across time. Tarang's design showcases the beauty of Terracotta & craftsmanship demonstrating a commitment to sustainable construction. Minimizing waste, reducing concrete use, and prioritizing local resources and labour, it serves as a model for environmentally conscious architecture that celebrates culture & contributes to the community

Our collaboration with the Architects on the TARANG project was a journey of trust & creative freedom. The design, inspired by the dynamism of waves, transformed the physical space & revitalized community engagement. Employing local craftsmanship & sustainable materials, it harmonizes architecture with nature, creating a vibrant cultural hub that minimizes environmental impact. TARANG emerges as a model of sustainable innovation & cultural heritage.
