spazio'TENGO Coop Reno Headquarters, a fusion between built and green

Soft curves and an organic design integrated into the natural fabric are translated into the development lines of the buildings that make up the New Coop Reno Headquarters project. Realised from the original idea signed by the two cooperatives for Coop Reno, the spazio'Tengo has a strong environmental imprint that inspired the architectural concept: a sprout that grafts itself into the territory, grows and takes place in the space, allowing an ideal fusion between built and green. The sprout grows and grafts itself into the territory respecting the characteristics of the context and interprets the role of an architectural complex in the making with a model of sustainable architecture.
The concept stems from an organic, relaxing curve that stretches out like a ‘trunk’ of a plant, with roots in the neighbourhood and branches spreading out into the greenery. Branches branch out from the main path, open and accessible, towards the main buildings, the ‘shoots’, which will grow as needed. The buildings, connected by a canopy, integrate green spaces and architecture. The development responds to the needs of Coop Reno, with a project that can be realised in stages and is capable of evolving. The goal of ‘zero balance’ imposes invariance of air quality, requiring mitigation measures, preservation of green areas and sustainable land use.
All the buildings constructed are NZEB - Nearly Zero Energy Buildings, meaning they are highly efficient and nearly eliminate energy consumption. These buildings feature photovoltaic systems servicing the various structures, providing a total production of 59 kWp to meet the Center's needs. Additionally, rainwater is harvested for sanitary uses, and a well water supply is used to avoid overloading the municipal water network. Measures have been adopted to ensure acoustic insulation and prevent the "heat island" effect. Moreover, materials with a high percentage of recycled content and FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified wood were chosen, along with construction techniques focused on lightness and maximum flexibility of interior spaces.
Spazio’Tengo is a workplace reserved not only for Coop Reno employees but also a space for leisure, training, and social activities. It is a space to welcome the community in its various expressions: work, family, education, and innovation. From the main path, designed with smooth and organic lines, conceptually open and accessible to all, different branches lead to the buildings: an architectural complex comprising the new Headquarters, an Auditorium, a Multifunctional Center, and a Logistics building. Symbolically, these architectures generate sprouts that bloom and form according to functional, economic, and organizational needs, creating an overall harmonious yet extremely iconic and recognizable image. The buildings, with their unconventional and fluid shapes, develop a floor plan characterized by large spans. Thanks to the use of seismic isolators, a construction system capable of freely shaping itself along the project lines was used. The presence of significant glass surfaces necessitated controlling solar gains within the spaces. To reduce this effect and combine a strong and recognizable architectural image, two essential components were combined: external shading with horizontal rings reminiscent of tree growth rings and a structural overhang that provides shelter from direct sunlight.
An unequivocal metaphor was realized from the concept. Newly constructed pavilions inspired by sprouts are grafted onto a gallery covered by a green roof stretching over the ground. The design echoes the strength of nature, with solids and voids, squares and paths blending with meadows. The transparency of the envelope connects internal spaces with nature and light, offering dynamic, fluid spaces focused on collective well-being.
