The project incorporates traditional Chinese aesthetics and cultural symbols like the contours of mountains, traditional sloped roofs, and the form of unfolded Chinese folding fans into its architectural form. The layout draws on the spatial sequence of traditional Chinese architecture and the facade integrates 7,500 varied perforated metal panels to highlight the distinctive city identity of Changsha, renowned for its rivers and mountains. The rooftop square courtyard with He Xi Tai conveys the spirit of Yuelu Academy which stands for millennium. The outdoor parking in alignment with the “Sponge City” initiative transforms into a public park on non-conference days, blending into the daily lives of Changsha citizens and serving as the urban living room of High-speed Railway New Town.

The project primarily employs passive energy-saving approaches and a comprehensive green building strategy that integrates both active and passive energy-saving measures, and fulfill the criteria of 2-star green building standards. The project maximizes outdoor space with a 40% green space ratio in the square and 75% in the roof garden, absorbing carbon emissions while enhancing shaded areas and carbon sequestration. The breathable double-layer skin facade is designed with high-performance sunshades crafted from a combination of perforated metal panels and glass curtain walls, with sunshade coverage of over 70%. The rooftop features rainwater collection and solar panels. The outdoors is equipped with water-saving irrigation, while the indoors have CO2 detection systems.
Changsha International Conference Center stands as the largest convention venue in central China. Distinguished by its unique layout, The Changsha International Conference Center departs from the conventional auditorium-style conference venues. Its layout design caters to both business meetings and government summits while offering flexible spaces to adapt to the diverse needs of various conferences. Since its operation, the conference center has hosted numerous international events, significantly enhancing Changsha’s global influence. In alignment with the “Sponge City” initiative, the open-air parking lot incorporates green design approaches. On non-conference days, it serves as a public park, fostering the connection between architecture and the city, and among people, whilst activating the surrounding neighborhood.
This project blends international standards, Chinese style, and the characteristics of Hunan while being economically reasonable, low-carbon, and energy-saving. It established the image of the High-speed Railway New Town in Changsha and has successfully hosted international-level events, such as the Second China-Africa Economic and Trade Expo, the First BFA Global Economic Development and Security Forum, and the World Computer Conference, achieving significant social and economic success.
