Reclaiming Lombardy's agricultural heritage and showcasing the waterfront, the new 12,000 square meter park is designed to serve as a manifesto for sociability and biodiversity, two qualities that public spaces should enhance. A 600-cubic-meter bio-lake surrounds sports areas, children's play spaces, and relaxation zones, integrating water management— a more pertinent theme than ever. This approach presents an opportunity for renaturalization and fostering a virtuous dialogue with the natural ecosystem.
This landscape project exemplifies how, for Parcnouveau, cities can flourish from nature, offering a tangible contribution to the One Health approach. This holistic perspective aims to consider the overall health of the planet as equal to that of individual beings.
The area is part of the Villoresi Canal system and serves as an entrance to the Grugnotorto Villoresi Park, a linear green system crossing Lombardy. The park integrates functional, social, and physical connections between blue and green infrastructures via pathways designed for slow mobility. A cycling path links the project area to the urban center of Monza, fostering city-level local synergies.
The project area connects the Villoresi system to the city, where the dense urban center transitions into agricultural lands. Here, remnants of secondary water canals, which shaped the agricultural landscape, are still visible. The project thus acts as a vital link between the urban/agricultural fabric and the city center/park of Monza.
Through bio-lake and water management, the project facilitates drainage into green areas, maintaining hydraulic balance and implementing sustainable practices such as phytodepuration. The design includes the creation of a variety of habitats, including trees, grasslands, and wetland vegetation, which are strategically planted to attract a diverse range of fauna. The focus on native and naturalized plant species not only supports local wildlife but also enriches the space for human visitors, creating a harmonious environment for both people and animals. The green area becomes an integral part of the ecological corridor connecting Villa Reale's park and Monza's Boscherona public park.
Throughout the park, a pedestrian walkway meanders, expanding and contracting to create distinct spaces, including a tree-lined square, playground, sports area, bio-lake, and waterfront seating area.
Situated above the Villoresi canal level, the project area offers a captivating and poetic view. The view inspires the creation of the waterfront area, providing a space where visitors can find solace in nature.
The playground is envisioned as a lively and dynamic hub, featuring both natural and designed play elements. The amphitheater, with its sloping terrain, doubles as a playful space where children can enjoy the slope itself. The sports area accommodates two main activities: basketball and calisthenics. The circular basketball court overlooks the bio-lake, offering views of the canal in the background.
Vegetated areas encircling the parking lots facilitate rainwater drainage by directing runoff toward softscape elements. This parking area serves the park visitors, the Palazzo della Musica, and the shopping center, while also serving as a starting point and node for the cycle path that follows the Villoresi Canal all the way to Panperduto.
The commitment to sustainability, permeability, and a natural aesthetic is demonstrated through the use of natural rock blocks for the bio-lake's retaining wall, natural stone for paving the pathways, and the steps made of rammed earth, which provide seating along the waterfront.
The challenge presented to the designers was to integrate commercial spaces with areas dedicated to culture, nature, and leisure. The goal is to transform the park into a daily meeting point for the local community while also attracting occasional visitors. The new park in Monza, designed by Parcnouveau, perfectly meets this requirement: creating an integrated system fostering social interaction. At the park's heart, a significant bio-lake unifies and attracts all the various functionalities.
