Hotel Metropolitan Tokyo Haneda, more than just a place to stay before or after a flight

HOTEL METROPOLITAN TOKYO HANEDA, located on the former runway site of Tokyo International Airport (Haneda Airport), offers a unique vantage point as the world-renowned gateway to Japan. This unparalleled location allows guests to immerse themselves in the vibrant activity of the airport, transforming the hotel from a simple transit point to a destination in its own right. Our aim was to enhance this experience by creating an interior that adds value, inviting guests to view the hotel as more than just a place to stay before or after a flight. Adopting the “perch” concept in our floor plan, we encourage guests to take a pause from their travels, akin to a bird resting its wings, and retreat into a space where they can enjoy the airport’s lively view.

We have integrated airport-like elements throughout the hotel, such as iconic runway-inspired corridors and chic aviation details, to ensure guests immediately recognize its airport hotel essence. The hotel also seasonally hosts occasional aviation-related exhibitions in the library section of the lobby area in collaboration with Japan Airlines Co., Ltd. Guests can learn about the history of the company and the aircraft itself, and it highlights the attractiveness of the area. In addition, our original signage, influenced by aviation fonts and runway markings, adds a playful touch to attract aviation enthusiasts. Artworks displayed in the hotel draw inspiration from actual aircraft parts and route maps, with some pieces reimagined from industrial products manufactured in the local area.

Among the artworks displayed throughout the hotel building, some are created from industrial scraps wasted from local factories. Utilizing and placing a focus on the scraps is not only eco-friendly but also fosters the understanding of local industries among guests. The noise of aircraft, an inevitable drawback for hotels adjacent to airport runways, is blocked out by applying high-performance multi-layered sash windows. This also enhances airtightness, thus improving the air conditioning efficiency of the hotel and contributing to establishing a carbon-neutral environment.

The hotel, situated in a stunning location overlooking an international airport where thousands of people around the world take off and land, is designed with exquisite details: hallways inspired by airport runways; and signages and pictograms inspired by airline fonts. The artworks that reflect the local industrial atmosphere, traditional culture, and history provide visitors with visual surprises and excitement for traveling regardless of their language, age, or cultural background. On the runway-inspired hallway, the markings show the approach angles of aircraft, which are found on actual runways. Here, they show different numbers to match the angles of the hotel architecture and indicate room numbers and wayfinding guides. Furniture and fittings are full of playfulness: a streamlined outline of an aircraft is incorporated in various details, an aircraft-inspired reading light, a toggle switch reminiscent of an aircraft cockpit, a pendant lighting inspired by runway lights, a factory-style table with screw-type legs, a ceiling fan from propeller planes. Not only does the hotel provide visual excitement, but it also introduces local features through exhibitions and artworks in collaboration with Japan Airlines. Moreover, the hotel has started expanding its presence with the support of the local community and is aiming to become an integral part of the community as the years go by.

The hotel features 13 different types of rooms to meet a variety of needs of its guests, a 360-degree rooftop observation deck, a fitness center and a New York-style Italian restaurant. With the concept of 'Hospitality and comfort on the journey', we aim to become a hotel that encourages our guests to replenish their energy, akin a bird resting its wings on a perch before flying out again. We strongly hope to provide guests from all over the world with a special experience and an enjoyable stay.
