The design concept is inspired first and foremost by the key principle of guaranteeing all the apartments designed direct access to air and light, via generously sized terraces and large French windows even for the smaller housing units.
The design was also strongly influenced by the post-COVID context, which generated a new expectation on the part of end users, who were particularly sensitive to outdoor spaces compared to the pre-pandemic period. Another guiding idea was to conceive a protected internal space, characterized by large green areas, in order to mitigate temperatures during the summer season. This space, a sort of courtyard, was designed as a safe and quiet place where children can play safely.
The context surrounding the development area does not present particularly valuable characteristics. On the two short sides of the building, we face a busy highway on one side and a continuous row of uniform-looking buildings on the other, next to a modest children's playground.
On the side overlooking the main road, an area opens up characterized by majestic trees, offering an instant perception of the hills that loom on the horizon towards the west.
The buildings themselves do not seek direct integration with the surrounding landscape; on the contrary, they voluntarily stand out to create a sign of discontinuity and innovation, thus responding to the request expressed by the client and shared by the designers.
The heart of our project lies in the conception of a building with a marked identity as a "machine for living", aimed at guaranteeing high energy performance and minimizing consumption both during the rigors of winter and, above all, during the hot summers. This was achieved through the use of a high thermal mass infill, which allows for a significant thermal shift.
For the first three floors, we adopted a construction method based on a steel frame and poroton infill, completed with a thermal coat. For the upper levels, however, including the attic floors, we opted for a wooden solution, with a structure made of x-lam and external cladding in wood fibre.
The layout of the three buildings creates a safe area where you can have a safe common space away from the streets. Another distinctive element of our project includes the large windows inserted in the recessed loggias, which allow abundant internal lighting without the inconvenience of direct sunlight. The loggias themselves have been covered with a sophisticated resin wood skin, a material that guarantees stability over time both in terms of color and size.
A further characterizing feature of the building is the single-pitched roof with a notable overhang, which gives a distinctive identity to the architectural complex as a whole.
Despite the intensive development approach adopted, we have worked diligently to mitigate the impact through refined architectural beauty. One of the key elements in this process was the introduction of phase shifts in the terraces, which give a distinctive uniqueness to each building.
