The design concept originated in response to the requirements of a public tender for the regeneration of a structure within Gianni Rodari urban park in Casalecchio di Reno. The project called for both a regeneration plan and an annual management strategy, necessitating a more complex structure than the original. The concept focuses on preserving and enhancing the original metal kiosk, transforming it into a new focal point around which diverse spaces are organized. These spaces are designed to harmonize with the surroundings of Gianni Rodari urban park, engaging in a dynamic dialogue with the environment.

The interior space aims to create a unique connection with the park, ideally bringing it into the new structure. The east walls are entirely glazed, facing towards the heart of the park, suggesting continuity between the inside and outside of the building. On the opposite side, facing the noisy Via Porrettana, there is a completely enclosed double-volume area illuminated by zenithal light from a two-pitched glass roof, reminiscent of the greenhouse structures found in parks. The original kiosk volume resumes its function as a service counter towards the open-space area. Additionally, the building features an upper floor overlooking the double-volume space and a terrace an outdoor area designed for summer use facing the center of the park, like the ground floor windows.
Starting from a slab foundation, the structure is entirely composed of laminated wood beams. To expedite construction times and processes, the walls are made of wooden diaphragm walls with insulated cavities. The external facades are clad in wooden boards, dry-constructed elements plastered with porcelain stoneware slabs, in addition to large windows facing the park and glass parapets. The roof is equipped with photovoltaic panels and heat pumps to make the new building as energy-independent and sustainable as possible.
One of the strengths was the restoration of the original metal kiosk, transforming it into the central core of the new interior design. This approach not only preserved the identity of the structure but also created a strong connection with the surrounding park. The east-facing walls offer panoramic views towards the heart of the park integrating the natural environment into the interior spaces. This helps suggest a seamless continuity between the interior and the external landscape. To counteract the noise from Via Porrettana, an opposite wall was designed to be completely closed and illuminated by zenithal light through a double-pitched glass roof, evoking the aesthetics of greenhouses found in parks. This feature not only improved acoustic insulation but also provided diffuse natural lighting within the space, further enhancing the user experience. The internal layout of the spaces was designed to maximize efficiency and usability. The upper floor offers a panoramic view of the double-height interior, and the summer terrace allows enjoyment of the surrounding natural environment, expanding usage opportunities and creating a welcoming, multifunctional environment. From a sustainability perspective the entire structure was built with laminated wood beams, ensuring not only strength and durability but also a reduced ecological footprint compared to traditional materials. Wooden diaphragm walls with insulated cavities improve the building's thermal and acoustic insulation, reducing energy consumption and enhancing user comfort.
This project stands out for its ability to blend history and innovation. Transforming the original metal kiosk into the heart of the new design creates a strong connection with Gianni Rodari Park. The use of sustainable materials, such as laminated wood beams and diaphragm walls with insulated cavities, demonstrates a commitment to sustainability. Large windows and natural lighting enhance the user experience, making the space welcoming and integrated with the surrounding environment.
