Embracing the Conrad brand’s dual focus as a luxury business hotel with leisure amenities, the Conrad Shenzhen’s massing is designed to embody these two core values. The guestroom tower is positioned along the eastern edge of the site and borders the adjacent business district while the podium, containing all the hotel amenities, is organized as a series of cascading outdoor spaces reminiscent of the nearby terraced hillsides. These outdoor spaces provide an oasis from the demands of business and create a contemplative atmosphere for guests.

The Conrad Shenzhen perfectly captures the balance of business and leisure hotel—an important attribute for the seaside financial district development. As a new business district, it is vital that the full functionality of the development is successful, including offices, retail, residential and hotel functions. The Conrad Shenzhen provides the necessary lodging capabilities—and at the appropriate quality level—needed to support the business district. At the same time, the hotel’s design encourages weekend leisure travel through its amenity-rich program, oriented toward the landscape and adjacent bay. This dual focus gives extended vitality to the cultural and retail programs beyond the weekday business community.

The hotel is sustainably designed to respond to its context. By elevating the podium volume, a 2,000-square-meter porte cochère is created to provide a sheltered arrival while landscaping and cross breezes are allowed to flow through the site. The terraced levels integrate landscaping throughout the roof surfaces, helping to control storm water, while enhancing the microclimate through sea breezes and integrated sun shading. Operable windows provide natural ventilation and façade materials were carefully selected to provide optimal performance specifically for Shenzhen’s climate, further reducing the energy demands of the project. Cooling needs are provided by the nearby district cooling system, increasing the efficiency of the cooling operations for the project.

The rich façade palette of stone, bronze metal and glass creates an image of understated sophistication for the project. Across the tower facade, materials intertwine to create a texture that emphasizes the changing quality of light throughout the day. This woven pattern is used intentionally to connect the design to the region, recalling the woven textures of local fishing baskets significant to the early days of Shenzhen while playfully reflecting the sun like ripples across Qianhai Bay. In this manner, the design embraces its local context by incorporating important traditional characteristics while elevating it through the use of refined materials and elegant details—a maturation not unlike the transformation of Shenzhen itself. The hotel’s design encourages weekend leisure travel through its amenity-rich program, oriented toward the landscape and adjacent bay. This dual focus gives extended vitality to the cultural and retail programs beyond the weekday business community. The hotel bolsters the success of Shenzhen by integrating the unique character of the region throughout its design. Whether through the extensive art selection or the architectural detailing, the project proudly celebrates the culture and ethos of the region. This integration ensures that the character of the project is specific to Shenzhen and represents the values of the region through its user experiences.

Conrad Shenzhen is an art and design lover’s paradise. Leaning on feng shui principles, contemporary design, and Chinese architectural details, the space is of warm neutral colors and burnished gold, artfully complemented by art while maintaining an airy, uncluttered feeling of tasteful minimalism. High ceilings, local Taihu stone, decorative bodies of water, and natural flora bring the outside in, while the ornamental embellishments of the rooms echo fishing villages and maritime features.
