It is welfare project to transform a basic elderly care facility from an existing school. The design focused on meeting the specific needs of the elderly, such as accessibility, living arrangements, public spaces, and smart care systems. It aimed to create a comforting environment that respects the residents' dignity and enhances their well-being. Inspired by the island's rich cultural heritage, the design concept envisioned the building as a floating ship, evoking the islanders' connection to the sea. The project also sought to integrate the care center into the community with open public spaces and communal areas, encouraging social interaction and support. The choice of local materials and quick prefabrication system overcame the construction difficulty in the island.

Chishan Island, located in Zhoushan's Putuo District in Baisha Township, is a 0.88-square-kilometre island surrounded by mountains and sea, preserving its pristine natural environment. The design respects the island’s climate and cultural heritage, utilizing local materials and traditional architectural elements to fully integrate the renovated buildings with the surroundings. The building facades feature red and blue colors, inspired by fishermen’s tradition of using leftover boat paint for their homes, creating unique family memories. To enhance the building's local character, the design incorporates washed stone for a textured effect. Rubble stones are used at the elderly care center’s entrance corridor, enriching the material layers and harmonizing with the surrounding atmosphere.

To respond to the humid characteristics of the island climate, the renovation carefully considered how to incorporate natural light into the building, aiming to improve the originally dark and damp environment within the limited space. The use of prefabricated components simplifies the construction process, addressing logistical challenges on the remote, hard-to-access island. The care center features a robust framework that combines concrete frames with steel columns. This hybrid system provides the necessary strength and flexibility to withstand the island’s coastal climate, enhancing the building’s durability and longevity.

To address the diverse needs of the elderly, the renovation expanded both public and private spaces, creating a more warm and comfortable community environment. The boundary between the open courtyard and the multifunctional hall was redesigned to enhance indoor-outdoor interaction, maintaining the courtyard's integrity while increasing connectivity and social engagement. Additionally, the elderly care center was linked to an adjacent independent building, forming a spacious and bright community dining hall and kitchen. A rooftop garden with a newly added tea room further enriches the rooftop activities. To connect various public spaces, a ramp was introduced, linking all outdoor areas. Planters and seating were strategically placed to segment pathways and spaces, enhancing the landscape and extending social areas for the elderly to enjoy nature and social interaction. The original second floor, previously used for residential purposes, suffered from poor lighting and ventilation. Before the renovation, a southern corridor blocked sunlight from reaching the residents' rooms. To address this, the design was adjusted to relocate corridors and staircases to the back of the building, while the southern space was reconfigured for resident rooms, providing ample light, ventilation, and views.

Chaishan Island once thrived on its fishing industry, but now faces significant population decline and aging challenges. The project aims to upgrade the island's elderly care facilities to provide a safer and more comfortable environment for the elderly, thereby strengthening governance and services on this remote island. The elderly care center seeks to enhance community cohesion through improved public spaces, injecting new vitality and momentum into rural revitalization.
