The Zhengze School is located in Beijing. The best primary and secondary schools in Beijing are typically located in areas of the old city. The schools have a long and rich history, and benefit from a prolonged advantage in terms of various social resources. The best teaching staff have always been closely associated with these prestigious institutions, and exceptionally talented students tend to gravitate towards them.

However, the high urban density of Beijing's old city, coupled with restrictions imposed by urban planning regarding volume limitations make the location challenging. In these circumstances, the renovation of old buildings in the old city cannot usually include an increase in the building area or alter the building's external contours. For these reasons, the development of the Zhengze School, which was transformed from an abandoned paper mill dating back to the Republican era into a school, needed to maximize every inch of the building area in order to meet diverse teaching and learning needs.

The school was renovated from buildings of an abandoned paper mill dating back to the Republic of China period (1912-1949), which greatly reduced the waste of building materials. Old bricks from the past building were reused. More natural light / skylight is used, which reduces the electricity consumption for lighting. The historical context inherent in the old buildings imparts a certain "spirit" to the school's teaching and learning spaces, benefiting the children. Perhaps, this is another reason why many prestigious schools are situated in old city!

Challenge: However, the high urban density of Beijing's old city, coupled with restrictions imposed by urban planning regarding volume limitations make the location challenging. For these reasons, the development of the school, which was transformed from an abandoned paper mill into a school, needed to maximize every inch of the building area. Solution: The previously space has been repurposed into a sports hall, lecture hall and science labs. A small square where lectures and Peking opera dance rehearsals can be performed. The space above the reservoir for firefighting is utilized as a space for practicing symphony music, and the rooftop space has been converted into areas for physical classes. Teaching materials are stored and displayed in various public spaces, which allows children to easily access a variety of learning materials.
