The school complex in Marcon is open, sustainable, equipped and connected to the community

The design aim was to create a school that is open, sustainable, equipped and connected to the community. A regular building was designed, whose slopes of varying inclination cover the entire space of the classrooms - designed to accommodate up to 660 pupils - and the remaining outbuildings.
The internal layout of the rooms follows a logic of northern European inspiration, which prefers flexible spaces that can be reconfigured according to needs to the schematic classroom-corridor layout; there is also no lack of green areas, accessible both from the gymnasium and from the institute's other entrances. In this context, traditional elements inspired by rural architecture are reinterpreted in a contemporary key thanks to the use of zinc-titanium surfaces.

The building is set in a semi-urban context, predominantly residential in character, and represents a strongly representative institutional presence. The geometric rigour, the compactness of the volumes and the austerity of the envelope give the building an institutional connotation, which clearly differs from the surrounding building types and becomes a reference point for the entire area.
The Marcon school was born as an open structure, to challenge common sense and the perceived boundary between private space and space intended for the community: the school opens up to citizens, hosting them in its spaces for cultural or sports events.

The new school building was designed as a class IV building, i.e. a building with important public or strategic functions, also with reference to civil protection management in the event of a seismic event.
It is a highly sustainable building that has achieved high energy standards in order to guarantee indoor environmental comfort for the well-being and health of pupils and teachers and to reduce the building's energy consumption to almost zero (NZEB - Nearly Zero Energy Building).
Particular attention was paid to optimising land use, leaving more than 30% of the lot to green areas and using low-impact waterproofing materials for the external paving, ensuring optimal drainage and efficient management of rainwater.

The new school building is open, sustainable, equipped and community-connected.
The building consists of four functional volumes: two blocks of classrooms arranged on two floors, the refectory and the gymnasium, which are articulated through flexible and innovative relational spaces.
The roof pitches and the particular cladding material of the façades give a unique shape to the different functional areas, creating relational spaces that culminate in the central atrium: the heart of education and sociability.
Here, a grandstand connects the two levels of the school, providing a common space for the students, with steps reminiscent of spectator stands. All paths in the school lead to this pivotal place, which is the main entrance and the pivot of composition and relationship with the outdoor spaces.
The combination of high and low ceilings, open and hidden places, small and large spaces, allows the children to find themselves in different situations from time to time: large assemblies, small play or work groups, moments of solitary activity.
The outdoor areas are an integral part of the school and each has a precise educational purpose: the southern garden is dedicated to outdoor play and related activities. In the centre of the architectural composition is the reading courtyard, sheltered from the sun to allow students to spend some time alone or in small groups on sunny spring days. Finally, to the north, near the gymnasium, is the space for sports and structured physical activity.

Curriculum

AI Progetti is a multidisciplinary company that incorporates in one workflow a wide range of specializations: engineering, architecture, interior design, landscape design, urban planning, restoration, project & construction management. We work as a single point of reference, capable of following the project development and its realization from the feasibility study to the executive and constructive project. This is possible because of our method, based on identification and sharing of a specific aim, through the collaboration between various disciplines and different requests (the one of the client, community and context).
In a flow of interaction and constant exchange between specific and general, between vertical specialization and design overview, we give life to works that exceed expectations not only in the final output, but also in the respect of deadlines, of the budget and of the aim that we share with the client.
