In most schools, the hundred-meter distance between classrooms and the sports field, coupled with short breaks, makes it difficult for students to play at the sports field. To address this issue, the design focuses on optimizing the layout to minimize the distance and improve accessibility. This will give students more time for play and relaxation during breaks, leading to a more vibrant and dynamic environment in the school.

This 36-class primary school features unobstructed connections between the classroom building and the sports field, ensuring seamless transitions in campus life. Given its proximity to the urban interface and the limited plot area, the design maximizes the use of land and vertical space by stacking various public spaces to reduce the distance between teaching areas and activity venues. Several direct ramps leading to the sports field create a layered structure, integrating and harmonizing with the context. Considering the surrounding context, the main teaching area is located on the quieter west side of the site. Public spaces, including the canteen, gymnasium, and multifunctional auditorium, are placed on underground and stilt floors, providing ample activity space for the teaching area.
The project integrates architecture and landscape, leveraging the existing terrain, topography, and water systems to establish a robust ecological cycle model. Greenery is distributed along the natural contours, forming a core green ecological corridor. The internal courtyards within the building clusters serve as the extension of this green network, creating a cohesive and continuous system of green spaces that enhances the overall environment. The architectural design strategically optimizes the orientation and landscape views to maximize natural sunlight and ventilation, reducing energy consumption and promoting environmental sustainability.
The innovative stacked spaces significantly enhance the functional efficiency of the school. This design ensures that children's after-class activities are no longer limited to classrooms and corridors, as activity platforms and the sports field are easily accessible. The stacked campus creates diverse space types, seamlessly extending the design concept, with several ramps skillfully connecting the classrooms on each floor to the sports field. Within the campus, the ramps are harmoniously integrated into the spatial layout, creating an enclosed and semi-enclosed spatial order. This arrangement strengthens the connections between individual buildings, facilitated by the interspersed ramps. The integration of ramps, courtyards, buildings, landscapes, and open spaces fosters an intimate spatial scale and a harmonious atmosphere, enhancing the overall campus experience. The ramps not only physically connect the classrooms and sports fields, but they also enhance the functionality and variety of the campus spaces. They create a more systematic and holistic campus layout, effectively enlarging the activity areas.
The Primary School of Hangzhou Shangtang Unit designed by UAD fully meets the requirements of the Design Brief. The architectural design features creativity, a well-organized layout, comprehensive functionality, and clear circulation, ensuring ease of use.
