The competition of education in China is fierce, especially at the secondary level. Therefore, most middle schools in China set learning efficiency in the first place, and they are designed like "education machine". As a boarding middle school, teenagers spend most of their adolescence at school. Healthy youth needs timely, effective relaxation and pressure release to discover beauty around them. Usually students would rather stay at classroom since they have do not have sufficient time to exercise outdoor in short ten-minute break. However, in our design, the entire forest area covers each floor of all teaching buildings, and students can quickly arrive at the “sky forest” after class, entering a "soft" space that is completely unlike school.
The project is located in Jiangbei District of Ningbo City, Zhejiang Province. Ningbo is a large economically developed city located in the southeast coastal area of China. It is a historically and culturally prosperous city in China which owns a key coastal port called "Ningbo Port", one of the five largest ports in the world. The base is located in the main urban area of Ningbo City with dense residential areas surrounded by. Therefore, there is an urgent need to construct a high quality campus directly under the Education Bureau. The northern side of the site borders the city viaduct and the remaining three sides are surrounded by dense residential, commercial and residential buildings. The task is to design a 30-class boarding ordinary high school in this high-density urban area.
The teaching building is lifted off the ground, and a large number of green landscapes are designed on the ground and roof. We also opened the entire outer wall of the teaching building towards the east side, and introduced a huge floating "forest" of 3,000 square meters. Rich rainforest plant structures and tall trees are paired with each other to form a vertical layer community of plants. Huizhen High School has been honored 2023’s World Building of the Year at the prestigious 2023 World Architecture Festival (WAF). Sir Peter Cook spoke highly of Huizhen High School and he said Huizhen High School is an incredibly impressive set of design. More than 600 media around the world including CNN,Bustler,Archinect,Archdaily and New Atlas covered the project and received widespread acclaim.
The path between classrooms is no longer the shortest straight line between two points, but presents a "growth and spread" state, like the twisted "plank road" between the forest canopy, which slows time and relieves stress. The "condensed" teaching buildings empty the ground, so that the ground is no longer a "fragment" cut by the building, but a "street" for free walk with various public buildings scattered on both sides of the street. The tightly connected teaching buildings naturally form a continuous undulating roof, wrapped in the garden walkway. With the passage of time, vegetation will gradually grow, and vines will cover the columns and walls of the forest.
Faced with the same site and the same planning conditions, we separate the "school" and the ”landscape” to redistribute "efficiency". We aim at promoting the "school" responsible for teaching to the most efficient and compact state possible: All the school buildings adopt a closely connected square layout, the east-west space is fully utilized to set up professional classrooms and offices, all the rooms and traffic Spaces are designed in the most cost-effective sizes.
Zhejiang University of Technology Engineering Design Group was established in 1983. It is a large-scale engineering consulting enterprise that integrates design, construction, and scientific research. It is based on the strong teaching staff and related disciplines of a comprehensive engineering university, with a high level of scientific research and advanced technical equipment as its advantages.
