The construction of the New School Center in Via Gastaldi represented for Alassio not only a building replacement of the pre-existing “M.M. Ollandini” but the opportunity to redesign a part of the city in a significant point such as the entrance to the urban centre. The project idea, shared with the Administration through participatory paths, was developed by focusing two objectives: creating a complex with a strong architectural connotation able to confer the existing urban layout a new communicative and identifying image of a place with functions scholastic and dedicated to an entire community. The concept is the idea of a school that opens up to the territory to which it belongs and the landscape that surrounds it.

The intervention area is located near the center of Alassio, in a dense and morphologically complex building fabric; the height difference between the upper and lower part of the lot became an input for the choice of a stepped volume which in the concatenation of several levels connected to the various levels of the external areas and the road network runs along the slope facing towards the sea, like the hills around the gulf. From a landscape perspective, the image appears of a large ship with overlapping decks and volumes that taper upwards from the articulated shape that accompanies the elongated shape of the lot: an architecture that surpasses the monolithic and austere forms of the demolished school building to come to the city with spaces, a multifaceted and true Civic Center.
The criteria of environmental sustainability and healthiness for users occurs through a LEED Oriented Platinum approach, CAM compliance, use of low environmental impact and recyclable materials; the prefabrication system in FSC-PEFC certified x-lam and laminated wood pillars and beams ensured construction speed and seismic safety. The energy performance of the Nzeb building was achieved through the high performance of the casing and fixtures and the supply from renewable sources via a photovoltaic system on the roof and solar collectors. The building is entirely equipped with a VMC system with high efficiency heat recovery, underfloor heating system and LED lighting fixtures with a level of automation and digitalisation of the Bacs “B” type systems.
The school is made up of three levels with classrooms, laboratories, offices and canteen for 300 students; there are also a gym and an auditorium which can be used independently.
The internal spaces intersect, leaving large volumes that bring the various floors into visual contact around the central square of the entrance hall on the first floor. The stairs, the steps, the galleries are the means through which a horizontal and vertical spatial concatenation is implemented which creates permeability and breadth of spaces for movements and exchanges, relationships that intersect and that invent, between inside and outside, new ways to experience school in the awareness that the space for education is itself an educational means. Added to this is the theme of strong colors that pervades the internal spaces, linking them to the external image.
The dynamics of flows continues outside in the path created on the sequence of stepped roofs that lead to the ground from the second level: a panoramic path with terraces and steps facing the sea which return the internal spaces to open areas in which the activities schools can expand but also spaces for other types of public activities.
The permeability between architecture and landscape is enhanced by the visual permeability that is achieved through the large windows that characterize all the spaces whose projecting frames in which colored shading curtains are inserted become the identifying architectural theme of the building.
The architecture runs through the landscape with its forms and imitates it by choosing the language of th piers and boats wood and the semantics of the colors: the white of the light, the blue of the sea, the yellow of the sand.
