The architectural challenge was how to connect to the original wing built with a characteristic symbolism - symmetrical floor plan, prominent central dome, striking colour- so the extension would not be excessive, nor copy the original. The TIBA Studio’s solution is strictly logical in its floor plan, geometrically playful in its facade design, fits both the wooded environment and the original building with its materials and colours. The contrast between the regular shapes and the playful composition, the neutral-coloured facade and the strong colour of the openings, the right-angled mass and the undulating roof is balanced in an exciting way. The new wing connected by the bridge engages in a dialogue with its dominant “big brother” sometimes calling for identity, sometimes contrast.

The floor plan of the extension is in contrast to the central symmetry of the original postmodern house. The classroom units, formulated as independent pavilions, sit on the corridor “branch” like leaves. The natural symbol reflects the proximity of the forest. Through the doors opening to the open air, large windows and roof of different angles the students are in direct contact with the surrounding nature, whether they sit in the classroom or spend their time in the common areas. The new building part with a transparent system uses simple architectural gestures: the high-ceilinged rooms covered with low-slope roofs, the undulating roof over the corridor and the prominent, wooden-framed staircase core give a good background to the colourful furniture chosen by the school.
The building strives to minimize both construction and operational costs. The building, embedded into the terrain, was economically constructed with reinforced concrete structures due to the larger internal spans. The use of materials enhances naturalness; for better maintainability, the facade is a warm-toned fiber cement cladding. The textured and smooth surface panels evoke the appearance of wooden planks and harmonize with built-in furniture. The window surfaces and skylights allow natural light into the spaces, and irregular placement flexibly adapts to usage needs: the high-placed openings frame views of nature. Where the parapet height allowed, they have been transformed to seating nooks. The ventilation operates on a gravitational basis, eliminating the need for mechanical systems.
Lauder Javne School is a community Jewish educational institution in the hilly district of Budapest, Hungary. The main building was designed in 1996 by Csaba Virág, a prominent representative of functionalism and high-tech in Hungarian architecture, he used a peculiar, narrative symbolism related to Jewish culture. TIBA Architects Studio designed a characteristically contemporary, yet intellectually coherent addition to the strikingly coloured, emphatically postmodern building standing next to the busy entrance road. The ensemble argues that any form can be appropriate if it conveys an authentic architectural idea. The characteristically contemporary extension, built almost thirty years later, reaches out to the postmodern main building, and a high quality was born from their joint handshake. The original building is a special colour spot of Budapest, its domed mass, salmon-red colour facade, strong symbolism attracts attention. The extension, which includes - according to the needs of the client - 6 classrooms, a gym, a storeroom, changing rooms and a staff room, was built on the back of the plot, connected by a bridge to one wing of the symmetrical main building, partially sunk into the slope, with direct access to the main building on several levels. Adapting to the steep slope, there are direct exits to the open air from several places in the new wing to the terraced garden.
"The cooperation was harmonious, the work of the designers was professional, yet empathetic. After mapping the needs, they presented us with concept design that were suitable for further thinking. The designers have created a plan that not only serves the function well, but also offers something lasting in the field of architecture, creating value. Thanks to this cooperation, the building was completed on time, within budget, technically decently and with sophisticated solutions."
