Zhoushan is the holy land of Buddhism in China, while lotus is one of the figurative symbols with the most direct connection and association with Buddhism. The design uses the shape of surging waves to embody the wisdom of Zen, aiming to create a "lotus on the sea" blooming on the east sea coast, thus giving Zhoushan Grand Theater strong and unique regional characteristics and Oriental charm. As the finishing touch of the entire space, the spherical "Eye of the Sea" floating in the middle is like the stamen of a lotus flower and a pearl of the East China Sea. The undulating streamline of the theater and hotel extends towards the sea, the facade presents an artistic effect of waves shining in the sun, and the outward leaning glass curtain wall shows a strong blooming intention.

In response to the site selection of the Grand Theatre, the design adopts a C-shaped layout that is highly compatible with nature and urban planning, striving to achieve a seamless integration. Facing the sea, the project enjoys the maximum expansion surface and the best visual field, internally, it encloses an urban public open space and forms a "welcome" and "shrink" posture on the urban central axis inside. Like a "knot" formed by the coastal walking belt on the sea, the circular inner plaza seamlessly connects with the coastal landscape walking system of Xiaogan Island, enriching the walking experience of the coastal space. Citizens can simultaneously enjoy the scene contrast of sea and city, nature and artificial work, quiet and bustle, infinity and finitude.

The interpretation of function, site relationship and hydrological data lead the architects to realize that the vertical design is the key to the rationality of the project. Based on vertical analysis, the first floor elevation of the theatre and hotel is placed on an offshore platform 9.5 meters above sea level, and the height of 9.5m is derived from the accumulation of the motorway under the platform of 5.5m and the tidal level difference of 4m. Such a tide water level is basically level with the elevation of the motorway, reducing the possibility of seawater erosion to the building.

The final 4-meter elevation difference between the inner ring and the outer ring coast is designed as a sloping plane into the water to strengthen the design intention of full integration of the scenes. In this way, when the tide rises or falls, the waterfront space can have a sound, friendly and natural interaction with the sea, weakening the artificial traces of the offshore platform.

The circular architectural composition maximizes the introduction of the sea view. The Grand Theatre and the hotel are two separate functional spaces, they face the sea on either side and each has the best view of the landscape, and they give way to the central axis of the sea viewing platform, "Eye of The Sea", which serves as the green axis of the city. The small conference hall is located in the middle of the Grand Theater and the hotel, and can be shared to a certain extent with the underground space.

Those coastal harbors always bring people a feeling of safety, warmth and stability. The "Eye of the Sea" in the center of the project provides a platform for citizens and tourists to view the natural scenery of Zhoushan. People can shop, view exhibitions, exercise and rest on the coastal walkway in the outer ring and the three-dimensional inner ring square. In short, the Zhoushan Grand Theatre is not only a public space for indoor performances, but also integrates into the city as a cultural le
