The project is located on the east side of Futian central axis, adjacent to Lotus Mountain Park. We aim to create an art village within the city, where city dwellers, artists, nature and the metropolis come together. We elevate the major performance space (grand theatre, art gallery and black box) to the upper floors to free up the ground floor, which becomes a large open district with cafes, stores, bookshops for the public. The rooftop is a vibrant urban balcony with greenery, café, and amphitheater, bringing nature and vitality to the building. Inspired by the characters of mountains and stones, the exterior and interior design of the building manifests the characteristics of them, in a pure and elegant way.
The design takes into full consideration the surrounding context, extending the greeneries of Lianhua Mountain Park into the site from its north. Bringing nature to the people, a vibrant rooftop garden connects the residential community, cultural landmarks, and public green spaces, creating candid visual connections that contribute to Shenzhen’s vertical urban ecology. An elevated main building may gain for us the following benefits:
1. The ground floor of the city is fully freed for the neighborhood, creating a culturally vibrant district.
2. The elevated building reveals itself as a distinctive landmark centered between the “mountain” and the “city.”
3. The rooftop terrace of the literary and artistic center offers a panoramic city view.
UHPC is a long-life and structurally improved material that combines cost, aesthetics, operational constraints, post-maintenance and sustainability. As a new material, it is attracting a lot of attention in the domestic construction industry. Overall, the UHPC material on the project demonstrated high strength of the panels, large dimension, strong modelling ability, rich color texture and high controllability, which matches the characteristics of the Centre and the temperament of cultural landmark building.
EXTEND: THE SIXTH FACADE The design takes into full consideration the surrounding context, and bringing nature to the people, a vibrant rooftop garden connects the residential community, cultural landmarks, and public green spaces.
LIFT: FREE THE GROUND SPACE We raised the massing to free up the ground level. Meanwhile, our design breaks itself away from the site’s pocketed boundary by introducing a series of cafés, souvenir shops, and creative spaces. The result is a clear-cut cultural district and public corridor at a pleasant scale for pedestrians.
WANDER: SKY LOBBY The theater entrance hall was kicked from the busy ground floor up to the 2nd floor, creating a sky lobby. As visitors walk up the escalator, they are met with the 2nd floor that suddenly expands, reminiscent of the moment in where confinement gives way to exuberance.
CARVE: FIELD OF ART Inspired by the characters of mountains and stones, both the exterior and interior of the Center resemble stacked marble blocks that are pure and elegant, summoning a seamless synergy of arts. The theater interior calls for an ongoing dialogue between the stages and the embrace of audience zones from all directions.
ACCOMPANY: ECOLOGICAL CLUSTER The rooftop landscape design draws inspiration from classical gardens, with winding paths connecting a diverse array of spatial nodes. This creates a unique experience where scenery changes as one walks within a “urban green lung” within the city.
We hope the project to be a seamless synergy of arts, a public realm, and an ecological park for people to enjoy art, nature and architecture itself.
