Due to the raising needs of university students, the municipality decided to construct a new library-youth center. The building is designed in a new developing area close to the university campus where the university students inhabited densely. The center is not only expected to serve as a library but also as a social and academic activity center for the youngsters. Performance spaces for social and cultural activities and academic studies are also provided besides the library functions.
The construction site is located at the edge of a large district park close to the commercial area. Because of the restricted construction area on the ground floor, which is 20x40m, of the plot the library-youth center is designed as a multistorey building. The main entrance of the building is located on the district park side in order to create a dynamic relation between the outdoor activity area, cafe and the exhibition space which are located on the ground floor.
Considering the functionality, location, climate, orientation and the surroundings each facade is treated by different approaches. The east facade which is visually and physically connected to the park is designed as a transparent surface which provides a continuous view of the city and the park. A massive facade with vertical narrow openings is designed on the west, not only to prevent the disturbing effects of the sun but also to reduce the visual contact with the apartment blocks. Transparent boxes designed as extrusions facing to the north facade frame the functions such as group study areas and children library. By this approach the use of daylight enhanced. Solar PV panels are used for the provision of the electricity as Konya is one of the best locations for this purpose.
The entrance hall is designed as a space which will be used as a gathering space, exhibition area and a passage to other activities, such as the cafe and the children library that are also located on the ground floor. First floor is designed as the library, a multipurpose hall and seminar rooms are located on the second floor, group and individual study areas for the students are designed on the third floor. The terraces on the east facade facing to the park provides the opportunity of enlarging the study areas to semi open spaces. Visual connection of these spaces with the entrance hall is also provided via the gallery.
Selçuklu Municipality Library and Youth Center, recently opened to visitors, was highly appreciated by the students. The library, which stands out with its structure where students of different age groups can receive service at the same time, is designed to support students' careers not only with its special environment and colorful design, but also with its social, cultural and educational programs.
