The restoration and enhancement project of the archaeological area of Crypta Balbi aims to integrate themes of conservation, accessibility, valorization, restoration, and consolidation. The concept of urban connection is executed through a design that differentiates two layers corresponding to different heights and chronological periods: the Roman era and the Renaissance period (aligned with the contemporary era). The design features covered and open areas accessible from all four streets surrounding the Crypta: Via Botteghe Oscure, Via Caetani, Via dei Delfini, and Via dei Polacchi. These public spaces include a covered section designed as a Renaissance square and a walkway that forms a narrative route, allowing visitors to admire and understand the archaeological excavations from above.

The project aims to integrate Crypta Balbi with other archaeological sites in Rome, connecting it to the city's historical itinerary from ancient Rome through the medieval and Renaissance periods to the present day. The goal is to create a cohesive space where ancient ruins intersect with contemporary urban life. Transforming the Crypta into an urban courtyard requires carefully planned interventions on multiple levels. Emphasis will be placed on conserving artifacts, ensuring their protection and safe accessibility for all visitors. The design will be contemporary yet respectful of the site's ancient heritage, featuring non-invasive architectural interventions that preserve the integrity of the archaeological materials.

The enclosure to protect the exedra area aims to safeguard the site's structures and assets from environmental risks. The objectives of the covering include:

  • Protection from rainwater
  • Prevention of condensation and the greenhouse effect
  • Shielding from runoff water and direct sunlight
  • Ensuring proper rainfall collection and removal

The absence of a covering would result in rainwater runoff onto the Roman walls and the iron exhibition structure, significantly compromising the state of conservation and increasing degradation phenomena. In addition to its conservation goals, the adopted technology also provides protection from radiation, ensures environmental comfort for visitors, and facilitates the collection of rainwater, aligning with environmental sustainability objectives.

The planned interventions aim primarily to preserve the archaeological heritage. All areas covered by the project are designed to be accessible to all visitors. The fundamental objective is the site's readability: historiographical investigations support a proper architectural narrative. The architectural proposal aims to enhance the historical context, not overshadow it. A conservative approach is combined with the principle of recognizability of interventions to provide an overall vision of the site.
Securing the site is crucial for both the legibility and enjoyment of the architectural structures.

The multiplication of access points to the area creates longitudinal and transversal paths, each corresponding to different narrative and experiential levels, making the visit a story. This configuration establishes genuine urban connectors, enhancing the interaction between the museum and the city, fulfilling the intention to create an inclusive and open cultural center.A collective space where the ancient meets the new, rubble becomes ruin, and the Crypta reconnects with Rome.

Curriculum

T-studio is a working and research group that draws inspiration from constant confrontation on shared themes. Founded by Guendalina Salimei, it is now enriched by a multidisciplinary and research team; the group finds a specific field of investigation and activity in the complex relationships established between design methodologies and modes of intervention in the built and natural environment, often in conditions of urban decay and social discomfort, combining innovation and tradition with a sensitive awareness of the local habitus. Their research and projects, which have won awards in Italy and abroad, been exhibited on numerous occasions, and have been presented in national and international scientific journals and publications, are characterised by a holistic approach that brings together the study of form, knowledge of materials, and reinterpretation of urban and natural contexts in integrated systems that are attentive to aesthetic, social, historical and ecological urgencies.
