The idea of CoFactory was born from the need to create a hub for digital fabrication and rapid prototyping, addressing the lack of spaces for manufacturing startups. It is a hybrid environment that extends the concept of co-working to the industrial sector, promoting collaboration and innovation. Developed with a co-design approach, the project aims to provide cutting-edge infrastructure for startups, scaleups, innovative SMEs, designers, and makers.
CoFactory is located in the Certosa District of Milan, transforming a former industrial space into an innovation hub. As part of an urban regeneration project promoted by RealStep, the storage area of the former Koelliker plant becomes a gathering center for a community of innovators. The facility, with its central plaza and modular spaces, integrates with the urban environment, creating a dialogue between the interior and exterior while enhancing the connection with the city and the local community.
CoFactory has a strong focus on sustainability. It employs smart construction solutions, sustainable materials, and off-site assembly to reduce time and waste. Natural lighting is maximized by skylights, while artificial lighting is provided by low-consumption fixtures. Ventilation includes an air biofiltration system developed by Aura System. These strategies underscore the commitment to eco-friendliness and well-being.
CoFactory Designtech stands out for its innovation and advanced technology, featuring machinery for rapid prototyping and digital fabrication. The design, curated by Pininfarina Architecture, combines aesthetics and functionality, creating modular and flexible spaces. The project fosters collaboration among startups, SMEs, designers, and makers within an innovative ecosystem. Additionally, the focus on sustainability is reflected in the use of eco-friendly materials and energy-saving solutions. The urban regeneration enhances the historical and industrial context of the Certosa district in Milan.
CoFactory Designtech is an example of innovation integrated into urban regeneration, transforming a disused industrial space into a center for digital fabrication. By combining design beauty with technological efficiency, CoFactory generates a positive impact on the community and the entire construction sector, serving as a potential model for sustainable urban development.
