From the project's inception, developer Fortis Property Group aimed to create more than just a building; they envisioned a landmark that seamlessly integrated with the local fabric while enhancing the neighborhood's vibrancy. Hill West Architects understood and embraced this vision, overcoming distinct site challenges and zoning regulations to create a stunning architectural masterpiece that marries modern aesthetics and luxury with the rich history of Brooklyn. Hill West optimized the unique location with a twisting exterior that not only redefines the Brooklyn skyline but provides each residence with unparalleled views of historic Brooklyn, Manhattan, and the waterfront.
Olympia stands as a beacon at the foot of the iconic Brooklyn Bridge, redefining the Brooklyn skyline. The designers drew inspiration from the building’s waterfront location overlooking the East River, creating a sail-like massing to emulate the arches of the adjacent Brooklyn Bridge. Given the distinct triangular site, the designers concepted a glass and metal tower atop a pre-cast podium. The materials reference Dumbo’s industrial concrete and brick grid without explicitly replicating it. The 401-foot-tall glass tower extrudes and tapers as it grows higher, with the homes’ balconies twisting with each story in order to capture optimal views of Manhattan, the Brooklyn Bridge, the East River, New York Harbor, and Downtown Brooklyn.
The landscape design supports the project’s place and regional ecosystem through newly developed green open space. At the ground floor and terrace levels, the landscape design creates intimate and verdant spaces that offer the users a respite from the typical city environment. The creation of these landscapes creates similar opportunities for local wildlife; native ornamental grasses, deciduous trees, and perennials attract pollinators as well as provide potential habitats to local birds. English Lavender and Azalea attract pollinators and fauna such as bees, hummingbirds, and butterflies. Coneflower and Blazing Star both attract pollinators with their showy flowers. Olympia has been recognized on the world stage as a finalist for the World Architecture Festival Awards 2023.
“Olympia is a market-making development–there has never been a building of this caliber in Brooklyn,” said Casey Drake, Vice President of Marketing & Sales for the building’s developer Fortis Property Group. “Olympia’s monumental sail-shaped tower is a modern interpretation of its surroundings, with a palette of colors and materials grounded in the maritime and industrial heritage of DUMBO's waterfront."
