The design is an approach to embed a residential home in its mountainous surroundings, by letting the materiality adapt to the landscape. Villa K is located above the Valle Isarco, in the rural village of Villandro. The area is characterized by meadows, pastures and chestnut groves, which influenced the main design. Next to the cultural landscape, the unique view on the Dolomites had also a decisive impact during the creation process.
The final outcome is formed out of three autonomous residential units with spacious outdoor areas. While the building shows closed and compact characteristics towards the north and the mountain side, it is oriented with large windows towards the valley and the south side. The open development spaces not only divide the building, but at the same time they emphasize the enormous overhang of the two wooden volumes. The terraced structure allows a consistent integration of the building into the topography. Traditional and natural materials characterize the appearance of the timber building. In particular, the shingle facade reflects the rough and naturalistic life in the mountains.
Villa K is located in the middle of the Alps above the Valle Isarco, in a small rural village at just under 900 meters above sea level. The villa is surrounded by an amazing alpine landscape, characterized by meadows, pastures and chestnut groves. In addition to the qualities of the cultural scenery, the view of the Dolomites was a decisive factor in the design process. Working with clear geometries allows for an economical and sustainable use of natural and local resources. Long lasting and energy-efficient concepts are reflected in the execution and ongoing use of the property. A simple and clear support structure provides the opportunity for a greater investment in durable finishes. The solid construction execution scores with low maintenance and follow-up costs. Traditional and natural materials characterize the appearance of the wooden house. Especially the shingle facade reflects the rough and natural life in the mountains.
Architecture is more than the total of its parts. Architecture is working with the environment, searching for potentials, developing qualities, dealing responsibly with people and their habitat, working with valuable and durable materials, consciously dealing with social and cultural components, building with sustainable and energy-efficient concepts, focusing on quality in planning and execution… Architecture is more than the sum of its parts. a lot more.
