It is commonly known that "architecture is frozen music," and that the conventional building techniques and supporting structures influence how static architecture is. Using mechanical dynamics research and digital intelligent building, the Lotus by the Xiang River seeks to transcend technological and disciplinary boundaries, actualize the moveable main space, and create a new level of urban public space experience.

The location of the site is along the Xiangjiang River’s bank. Due to vegetation obscuring the river, the line-of-sight study shows that the height of the current buildings cannot provide the best view of the river. To provide a multifunctional complex space for the city, the design intention is to expand the boundary of spatial experience, envisage a Lotus by the Xiang River blossoming slowly along the river bank, bringing a new view field and urban landmark for the city. Based on the primary space design, the design is replied to by intelligent construction, technological composition, and blooming form, as well as the development of the country’s first kinetic architecture building.

The entire structure mimics the bionic appearance of petals as well as the dynamic impact of petal opening and shutting. To achieve the ideal bloom of the flower, the “petals” are unrolled and the “flower core” tourist hall is revealed using power mechanical equipment. “Calyx” has a power mechanical system of hydraulic scissors support and flexible column. The “flower core” sightseeing hall (diameter of about 10m, area of 80 square meters) will jump from the second to the third layer (height difference of 3.5 meters), resulting in the overall realization of flowers “bloom” mimicry effect. “Petal” is made up of four outside layers (7m*5m) of fillet hexagonal transparent ETFE film material and five inside layers (6m*6m). The surface pattern is intended to mimic the triangular oblique roughness of petal leaf veins. Through the full process digital design optimization, the production of intelligent factory components and the way of assembly construction, ensure that the project is controlled by the full life cycle accuracy of the design to the ground. Through the integration of digital technology, simulation technology, intelligent construction, assembly construction, and other subjects with the dimension of traditional architecture, Lotus by the Xiang River is designed and constructed by industrial equipment to create a new empirical urban public space, serving as a new example for the dynamic architecture of the entire structure.

The kinetic variability of the entire building is based on the realistic variation of the interior space experience while taking the beauty of the dynamic appearance into consideration. The building will be transformed into an urban landscape project.

Curriculum

Founded by Meng Fanhao and Zhu Peidong, line+ studio is a diversified emerging design firm with international reputation. Currently, it has offices in Hangzhou and Shanghai. "line" is the boundary, based on architectural design, and "+" aims to break through the clear boundaries of traditional industries, take "space empowerment" as the core strategy of research and creation, and respond to the existing problems of urban and rural areas in the current era, so as to realize the value iteration and release of architecture in social, economic, cultural and other fields.
