The PXG Building in Seoul embodies the essence of the luxury golf brand

The seven-storey building visualizes heritage and culture of the luxury golf brand Parsons Xtreme Golf (PXG) through its bold form and solid materials. The main architectural language of the building, which is shaped like a radiator with 18 vertical sun breaker walls, derives from not only the brand visual identity but also micro-climate design. Each sun breaker wall is 400mm wide, 33m tall and is extended by 1.4m from the west-facing wall. To resist tremendous wind forces, the structure is stiffened by Vierendeel trusses, which are formed by 100mm x 100mm steel square tubes.

Another important architectural gesture is the multi-terraced mass. The goal was to create a sustainable workplace with maximized outdoor space for staff and visitors befitting the living conditions for post-pandemic era and therefore, enliven the tight public realm of Seoul city. Despite the strict sky exposure plane on site, the floor area ratio had to be maximized while considering the spaces for 6 outdoor terraces. This was realized through gradual setback of the volume on the north and east side of the building.

The façade with 18 vertical sun breaker walls offers ample daylight and appropriate thermal conditions for energy-efficiency. Each wall is offset by 1620mm in accordance with dimension of building modules; 8100mm module split into 5 equal parts, which adds three-dimensional depth to the rectilinear outer skin. It protects the building from solar heat gain by deflecting direct sunlight.

Establishing flexibility within the working zones also comes down to sustainability. Post-tension girder was implemented to construct a 15m x 17m column-free space. It is this method that allows the building to continuously adapt its space layout in respect to its evolving needs, which ultimately minimizes construction waste.

The challenge lay in synthesizing two independent concepts; delineating luxurious nature of the brand PXG with emphasis on its core aesthetics and establishing sustainable workspaces that promote ecological and environmental balance.

The boldness of the brand can be perceived obliquely via its use of symbolic color - black. Such intense color was neutralized by employing a composition of various cladding materials that lend sophisticated texture. The three black materials (terracotta, porcelain and PVDF coated aluminum) are homogeneous in color but each manifest different light reflectance value and surface finish. Terracotta panels play a dominant role in complementing the two other distinct materials in a refined manner and successfully reconstruct the existing visual identity of the brand into an architectural language. The black building was shaped as a multi-terrace based on vertical modules; 1300mm.

To facilitate an active spatial rhythm between the internal offices and outdoor break spaces, 6 different terrace types have been strategically executed as adjoining volumes. The flexible outdoor spaces provide an economical solution for vegetation and fresh air inlet for spacious office, which promote environmentally sustainable spaces and act as a catalyst for social gathering.

One of the client's requests was to make the first impression of the building unforgettable by avoiding cliché architectural component such as a gable roof, punched window, etc. So instead of installing vertical louvers on the west façade, the conspicuous and large 18 sun breaker walls were constructed. Thus employees of the PXG company nicknamed the building 'the radiator'.
