The design is based on two key elements. The first is the surroundings and climate, which influence the structure's form and materials. In such a flat setting, the design proposes a new topography that will serve as both a break shelter and an observation platform for the mountain and lake with little disturbance. The structure's east-facing orientation is guided by existing trees, lakefront woodlands, the promenade, Cang Mountain, and Erhai Lake. The roof and foundation include a gap for wind and daylighting, as well as spectacular views, making the space beneath the roof open and flowing. Another issue to consider is the service groups of both tourists and residents in the public building. As a result, the entire organization must be accessible and inclusive to open arms to everybody.
Dali City is well-known for its peace, beauty, and pleasant weather. The original intent is to integrate architecture with climate ecology, the surrounding environment, and public activities. The structure's direction is determined by Erhai Lake, Cang Mountain, and the rural villages to the north and south of the area's boundary. The choice of materials and construction technique is related to the surroundings to be ecologically friendly enough to protect the native natural environment, such as the low-tech, manually crafted rubble masonry for the foundation, and the wood formwork concrete for the roof.
The site is situated in the Erhai Lake ecological protection zone, so there are specific environmental protection requirements for the construction and material selection. The foundation of the structure is composed of low-tech, manually crafted rubble masonry. Concrete has less cement and more mineral aggregate and natural dyes. By using experimental simulation and on-site mock-up, the concrete roof's dark colour and texture are precisely managed to provide a non-decorative, natural effect performance and reliable physical performance. The railings, stair treads, grooves, and other detail components that are a part of the structure were all made from recycled reinforcement and steel plate scrap that was present on the construction site.
The Dali Erhai Lake Ecological Corridor development project seeks to create a thriving ecological buffer zone between water and land and offers visitors and locals a lake-closed viewing platform. The project is one of numerous service stations that have been established along the 129-kilometer road. The natural landscape of the station is also evolving into a fluid living landscape with the incorporation of rich activity scenarios. The project’s special protection region area also makes us pay more attention to the environment and climate. Rather than a house-style station, it has been a part of the terrain and grows by nature. Local materials are the first choices in the design, and the construction produces pollution and waste as less as possible. The wasted steel and plates on the site are recycled to be a new part of the building. And the building operation asks for very little artificial energy and the maintenance of the building will not require much.
It is not simply a public viewing platform or a restroom, but also a landscape structure that welcomes those who pass by. Children, as well as their parents, girls, boys, young and old could all find a spot to relax, take a rest, converse, or do whatever they wanted.
Founded by Meng Fanhao and Zhu Peidong, line+ studio is a diversified emerging design firm with international reputation. Currently, it has offices in Hangzhou and Shanghai. "line" is the boundary, based on architectural design, and "+" aims to break through the clear boundaries of traditional industries, take "space empowerment" as the core strategy of research and creation, and respond to the existing problems of urban and rural areas in the current era, so as to realize the value iteration and release of architecture in social, economic, cultural and other fields.
