The design idea borns from the need to create new facilities suitable for the new generations, who no need large spaces for large families, but who need spaces on a human contemporary scale, capable of adapting to the changes of modern life, and with an appropriate price. Therefore, an attempt was made to create a residential complex that, although simple in its interior solutions, seen from the outside had the ability to attract and upgrade the area in which it is inserted. An architecture characterized by the irregularity of the openings in the verandas and porches that open onto the Molentargius Park and the Poetto beach, a project that is always moving and never boring.
The project fits on the edge of the city of Quartu Sant'Ellena, in the south of Sardinia close to Cagliari, in a boundary that includes parts of the countryside, buildings of low compositional value and natural elements of great value, such as the "Parco delle saline di Molentargius" and the Poetto beach. The project seeks to give a strong compositional character to the area, in the quest to upgrade and improve the pre-existing urban environment, opening up with the main elevation and large verandas to the natural environments. Compared to the surrounding area, the architecture speaks a clear contemporary language in the quest to give a new thrust and a new soul to an area that has hitherto been undefined.
A project that is spread over 4 levels above ground and a basement. All floors are used for residential use, we can find 28 apartments of different sizes, from studios flat on the ground floor to two- and three-bedroom apartments on the upper floors, in the quest to have different types for different types of young buyers. All of the apartments have gardens or large terraces that overlook the natural environments of the area and allow for consonant Sardinian summer evenings.
From the architectural point of view, the project is strongly characterized by the presence of the large verandas and the irregular openings applied on them, which break up the too-horizontal trend of the building, thus allowing for a complex in which the façade is always moving and never obvious. These are contrasted by the balconies, which, through the highlighting of the attic, push all the facades toward horizontal lines, guiding the eye toward the irregular openings of the verandas.
Materials help draw and guide the eye to the reading of the facades. The wood of the breakthroughs and regular parts thus contrasts with the materiality of the limestone that envelops the verandas with their irregular design.
A complex suited to the contemporary challenge of finding a home for young people, economical, ductile, smart but above all from a great architectural value. An architecture that will be able to redevelop the area in which it is located, both architecturally and socially.
