The rue Curial is a working-class district of the 19th district of Paris. It is charactherized by heterogeneous constructions. The project is a new building for the public housing agency of Paris (ELOGIE SIEMP), whose mission is to stop the substandard housing, which was the case for this building.
The plot is in triangle and we wanted to work on this complex shape. We created a natural triangular movement to offer terraces to apartments, an inner-outer link well valued by the residents. The creation of a garden brings creation of crossing appartments, which are very bright.
The local town plan and the study of the urban context has oriented us towards a dense project on one side, and airier on the other.
In doing so, the building makes a link beteween the urban scale, very busy, of rue Curial, to the calmer atmosphere of the passage de Crimée.
The homogeneous and pure volume proposed on the passage de Crimée is redivided on the rue Curial into a moving and dancing strat that shelter the private balconies of apenwork metal. Through a simple and elegant gesture, these movements allow the project to enter into dialogue with the very heterogeneous built environment of the neighbourhood and add a harmonious and evanescent rythm to the "music of the city".
The project received sustainability and eco-compatibility « Housing & environnement » 2012, Qualitel label, energetic level RT 2012, 20% option performance quality level 1, and
it respects the Climate Plan of Paris. The environmental quality (HQE) of this building consists in controlling the impact of the building on the external environment and to create a healthy and comfortable indoor environment. It's an operational response to the need to integrate the criteria of sustainable development in the building production.
For Christelle Avenier and Miguel Cornejo, designing beautiful housing units means guaranteeing the sustainaibility of the building.
The agency created a natural triangular movement to offer terraces to apartments, an „inner outer link“ well valued by the residents. On rue Curial architects preferred a 6-storeys building, less penalizing in height for the adjoining buildings and visually softer for the design of the street. Moreover, the height mirrors the neighbouring building on rue Curial. On the passage de Crimée, along the party line with the marble factory, the project stops at the 4th storey and a vegetated space is left free, minimizing the impact of the gable wall. This configuration allows for a smooth transition of built heights between the corner of rue Curial and the rest of the passage de Crimée. In addition, the position of the space left free of construction in the southeast corner of the plot allows the creation of facades facing south and, thus, the optimization of natural solar gains. Indeed, the creation of a garden brings creation of crossing appartments, which are very bright. On the Rue Curial side, the volume is hollowed out above the R+3 in its southern part. The facade is then aligned with that of 50, rue Curial, which is set back from the street alignment. This device makes it possible to reduce the size of the gable wall on the neighbouring parcel and to preserve as much as possible its views and its natural light contributions.
Christelle Avenier and Miguel Cornejo wants to offer generous spaces with natural light in which it is good to live in.
Christelle Avenier and Miguel Cornejo created their agency in 2008.
The agency won the "Europe 40 under 40" prize in 2014. In 2017, the english magazine AR, rewarded the project of rue Bonnet, in Clichy-La-Garenne. Since then, the agency has acquired extensive experience in the fields of housing and public facilities.
The Equerre d'Argent 2019 rewarded Pantin in the Housing category.
Their approach is increasingly focused on the environment, knowledge and enhancement of materials. Studies focus on the use of biosourced materials and construction methods but also on understanding environments, uses and new ways of living.
Their work is also expressed on space, light, outdoor spaces, proven to be so precious in urban environments. Coming from different backgrounds, the agency sees projects from multiple angles, without a priori or prejudices, to give rise to a reflection specific to each program.
