The vitality of our proposal is rooted in a creative symbiosis of architectural elements and their functions. The design concept was to create a microcosm of the suburban main campus on a small urban plot within a densely developed neighborhood. The smassing consists of two solid masses containing traditional well-defined programs such as conference rooms, classrooms, and hotel rooms are linked by a series of transparent volumes. These glass-enclosed public spaces – the lobby, the atrium and the cafeteria – connect the various activities while projecting the center’s inner workings to the city beyond.

The ground floor integrates both existing and newly planted vegetation, enclosed by a porous and spacious natural site boundary. The entrance plaza covers over 1000m2 on the southern portion of the site and is designed to gather people, host events, and facilitate leisurely activities for the surrounding neighborhood. These context-specific design interventions result in an extension of the neighborhood’s vibrant identity. The Streetscape is extended inward to form a full-open public concourse, providing physical platforms for social discourses, gatherings, art creation, communal and cultural expressions.

The scheme proposes a vertical campus with a large collection of varied spaces to support different learning modes. The design delineates clear and flexible circulation routes amongst the distinct programmatic requirements. Traditional classroom spaces and large workspaces areas are located on the ends, all anchored around a publicly accessible atrium. The major spaces are reachable through a series of hierarchically arranged public areas filled with daylight. All corridors and vertical circulations converge at the 30-meter high naturally ventilated central atrium. A collection of glass pods dramatically protrude into this central atrium, enhancing the overall spatial experience while subtly generating visual and symbolic connections among different users. Functionally, the atrium acts as an open multi-purpose galleria that connects the outdoor plaza with the indoor grand atrium. It serves as a shared concourse for impromptu encounters and relations, a place where knowledge, art, communication and society could inter-mingle.

Since NCCU opened its doors, the entrance plaza has been very well-received by neighborhood residents. Even though heavy usage has led to higher maintenance cost, it is immensely gratifying to see the design concept of “neighborhood park” successfully realized.
