Hangzhou International School redefines the meaning of education and creates a new teaching scenario characterized by intensive land use and high-efficiency space, with shared and communicative space as the main feature, as well as realizing the rearrangement of teaching resources and reshaping of the educational environment. Although the "flexible classroom" teaching style allows pupils greater freedom, it might result in lengthy class changes. As a result, it is critical for the design to address efficiency to increase student connection and involvement in extracurricular activities while also pushing the development of activity areas during their school time. The central radiation configuration layout, which is built on sharing, equality, efficiency, and experience, organizes and defines the whole campus.

The project site sits on the shores of Baima Lake in Binjiang District, across the river from the main part of Hangzhou. Although Binjiang District is known for hosting the headquarters and industrial parks of tech companies, Baima Lake remains untouched by urbanization, retaining its flattering natural features. Within the context of a nascent urban culture, design considerations for HIS stemmed more from general reflections on the internal organization of schools as a building type. The site is an irregular L-shape. In order to form the most intensive and compact layout, the design first determined the location of the playground to free up as much open space as possible and reasonable management path.

Due to restricted site space and the diversity of activities, an "Education Hub" is a new school typology that integrates teaching space elements in a non-linear, platform-based way to provide more effective, shared, and equitable learning experiences. And the design is to create a multicultural environment in which students and instructors of all ages from all nations may interact respectfully and build moral principles as if being an international community. The functional modules of the Hub complex accommodate two sets of functions: physical exercise and artistic performances, emphasizing the balanced development of physical and mental education. Here, students grow through interactions, cooperation, and competition with their peers, gaining confidence on the "stage" where they are the main characters. The Hub space programs a 25m*6 lane natatorium (1F), an elementary school gymnasium (2-3F), a middle school gymnasium (4-5F) in the east, and a restaurant (1F), a Black box theater (2-3F), and a grand theater (3-5F) in the west, which is connected with the staircase, as well as a social platform. The atrium stairs serve as the spatial guide and organizer of the Hub and are linked to the grand staircase in the lobby and the corridors inside the teaching clusters to create a continuous social platform that provides abundant opportunities for interaction among teachers and students with different cultural backgrounds.

The future education scenarios we envision should be a community where knowledge, information, and vitality are intertwined, and sharing, diversity, and complexity are embraced.
