Baumschlager Eberle Architekten won the competition for this campus in Vienna. The goals of the new facility with kindergarten, elementary school and new middle school are as follows: The campus ensures social infrastructure in the district as well as provide high energy efficiency and cost-effectiveness. The implementation is reflected in its organization: the campus accommodates eight educational areas and three groups of children (1,100 pupils) in three wings. Outdoor classrooms, walkable outdoor spaces and the unique rooftop garden are the highlights of the space offered.
Along the busy Breitenfurter Strasse, the complex forms a clear spatial edge, while opening up to the the neighboring green space. The individual educational areas form self-contained building sections that are accessed by the generous communication zone.
The new building is located in a complex urban situation in the mixed-use area consisting of mostly low-rise residential and commercial buildings without any special urban character. Massive noise emissions develop at the intersection of Breitenfurter Straße and Walter-Jurmann-Straße, while a new residential quarter is being built to the west and the former Sargfabrik is adjacent to the south.
Openness and cohesiveness therefore had to be brought under control in terms of urban planning. Openness and unity therefore became the planning leitmotif for the entire complex. With its facade system of light-colored walls and high windows, the architecture consistently reflects this dialogue on all sides of the campus.
Characteristic for the concept is to significantly minimize the energy consumption for heating, cooling, ventilation, lighting and drives by passive as well as energy-saving active measures and to cover the remaining demand in a resource-saving way and by local energy sources (heat pump). The combination of a high building storage mass with concrete core activation for space heating and cooling is a key point of the technical concept. This has a high self-regulating effect on the indoor thermal climate, as it can first absorb internal loads itself, thus relieving the heating and cooling system. The two-dimensional low-temperature system can be optimally combined with a use of the ground, which has a year-round temperature level of 10-12° C.
The basic possibilities of architecture, light, geometry and materiality, are perfectly sufficient to tell the story of the Bildungscampus Atzgersdorf. Architecture, in fact as metaphorically, always has something to do with standing and the plasticity of the built. This has to be organized. In Atzgersdorf, it is the dialogue of openness and closedness that accentuates the plasticity and the associated tension of the facades. The recesses and projections of the building sections combine with the arrangement of the different window formats to form a common whole that is deliberately adapted to the respective situation.
The campus conveys calm, is a framework for human coexistence in everyday school life. Important and comprehensible for everyone are the proportions of the building, the relationship of the parts to the whole. This elementary quality of architecture is not often found today, so it was important for us to bring it out. The architecture corresponds with the building concept: both are greatly reduced in effort, aesthetic as well as energetic sustainability across all fashions come to bear are tailored to the needs of the users.
