The main issue in the design is how to realise the transition from traditional to contemporary architecture in the old city and cultural preservation building area. The phrase "South of Shanxi eight strange, the house has a half slope roof" indicates the local architectural style. The building shape is influenced by this frequent regional feature, with an internal courtyard and a single-pitched roof. And the mass's apertures towards the surrounding block, which have a wonderful interaction. The exterior wall's shape responds to Yicang's architectural language with the form of little above and huge below, and the blue brick wall is rhythmically drawn in at a particular angle. The inner courtyard features a wonderful structure that draws attention to the entire area.
The project is in Yuncheng, Shanxi Province, close to the cultural heritage protection building - Yicang on the west side, not far from the Guandi Temple. The design reflects a respect for the location and its history, as well as the design philosophy of restraint. The selection of materials for the building comes from the research and response of local culture, mainly with rusted steel plates and green bricks, and the old blue tiles are used for the roof, so as to create a sense of time and place, responding to the long history and culture of Yicang and Guanti Temple. The building's exterior is interwoven with brick walls and glass surfaces, which provides the city with a high-quality public living room while also integrating the current life scene into the traditional field backdrop.
The project's total building space is 824 square meters, with a land area of 1450 square meters, acting as a book shop and read café in two floors. The study interprets traditional architecture with modern formal language, making it both contemporary and integrated into traditional protected buildings. In the overall circulation setting, due to the limitation of the height of the cultural protection area, it is partially dug down to form a complete walkway on two floors, in order to create an open and creative public cultural space. There is a delightful structure in the inner courtyard to highlight the whole space. The interior space follows the architectural shape, with a continuous weathering steel wall as a clue, series reading, exhibition, reception, interaction, and other areas, strong geometric changes break the definition of the ground and the wall, making the sense of space stratification, forming a complete ring space, while adding the interest of spacewalking experience.
It is not an amazing new structure with a visual effect, but it has become a part of the historic town with a gritty texture on a daily basis. The modest facility houses a variety of everyday public activities for local inhabitants as well as cultural events.
