One Works designed the crucial Riga International Airport expansion (RIX) terminal, a vital part of a significant intermodal program. An essential aspect is its connection to the Rail Baltica High-Speed Railway Station, also designed by One Works. This integration creates a seamless complex of passenger services serving travellers across the Baltic States, Poland, and Finland, ensuring smooth and convenient travel for passengers using various transportation modes.
The urban planning and architectural intervention aim to construct a new terminal building that seamlessly integrates with the surrounding urban environment. Careful planning of networks and passenger flow, along with optimizing pedestrian access and routes to parking areas, ensures an efficient and well-connected terminal. This project aligns with the intermodal program, accommodating 12 million passengers annually for the next five years. The terminal's connection to the Rail Baltica high-speed railway station forms a unified complex, offering modern facilities and services for travellers across the Baltic States, Poland, and Finland.
The project emphasizes sustainability, utilizing local and eco-friendly materials for both interiors and exteriors to minimize environmental impact and blend seamlessly with the surroundings. Externally, the terminal features a transparent glazed curtain wall with metal and wooden shading elements. Inside, wood and metal elements create a rhythmic ceiling design, while dark natural stone and ceramic tiles mark the floors. Modular wooden cladding adorns interior vertical surfaces in key passenger areas. The project is pursuing a BREEAM Assessment for a certification level of at least "Very Good," affirming its dedication to environmental sustainability and responsible building practices.
