One Works designed the crucial Riga International Airport expansion (RIX) terminal, a vital part of a significant intermodal program. Its aim is to manage efficiently the projected 12 million annual passengers in the next five years. The terminal offers state-of-the-art facilities and services aligned with development plans for public and private transportation.

An essential aspect is its connection to the Rail Baltica High-Speed Railway Station, also designed by One Works. This integration creates a seamless complex of passenger services serving travellers across the Baltic States, Poland, and Finland, ensuring smooth and convenient travel for passengers using various transportation modes.

The urban planning and architectural intervention aim to construct a new terminal building that seamlessly integrates with the surrounding urban environment. Careful planning of networks and passenger flow, along with optimizing pedestrian access and routes to parking areas, ensures an efficient and well-connected terminal. This project aligns with the intermodal program, accommodating 12 million passengers annually for the next five years. The terminal's connection to the Rail Baltica high-speed railway station forms a unified complex, offering modern facilities and services for travellers across the Baltic States, Poland, and Finland.

The project emphasizes sustainability, utilizing local and eco-friendly materials for both interiors and exteriors to minimize environmental impact and blend seamlessly with the surroundings. Externally, the terminal features a transparent glazed curtain wall with metal and wooden shading elements. Inside, wood and metal elements create a rhythmic ceiling design, while dark natural stone and ceramic tiles mark the floors. Modular wooden cladding adorns interior vertical surfaces in key passenger areas. The project is pursuing a BREEAM Assessment for a certification level of at least "Very Good," affirming its dedication to environmental sustainability and responsible building practices.

The project serves as a thoughtfully designed intermodal node, seamlessly integrating with multiple transportation systems to establish the airport as a crucial regional hub. Maximizing flexibility in both physical spaces and functional arrangements is a cornerstone of this expansion. Careful planning allows for seamless incorporation of future expansions without disrupting ongoing operations. This foresight ensures the airport's ability to adapt to changing passenger needs and technological advancements. The strategic use of flexible spaces extends beyond the project's current scope, accommodating anticipated growth and capitalizing on development opportunities in the future. By prioritizing an intermodal approach and flexibility, the expansion solidifies the airport's role as a vital "territorial gateway." It offers efficient transit services while creating a welcoming environment for travellers and visitors. The vision is a well-connected, modern, and future-ready airport seamlessly integrated into the larger transportation network, contributing to regional development. Architecturally, the project follows a simple and innovative Nordic design approach, focusing on clarity, luminosity, and natural light. Moreover, integrating multiple technological and interface platforms enhances the user experience, ensuring convenience and efficiency throughout the airport.

The Riga International Airport expansion is a crucial "territorial gateway," connecting various systems in a rapidly growing context. With projected air traffic of 12 million passengers annually and 113,000 movements by 2036, it offers more than transit; it provides a welcoming environment for relaxation, gatherings, and cultural encounters. This dynamic space converges diverse dimensions of space and European cultures, creating an enriching environment for travellers and visitors.
