THE SERVICE STATION 2.0, charging electric cars in a comfortable waiting space

SICARCHITETTURE - ARCH.IVANOE CASTORI

The idea that gave birth to the start-up EV Station stems from a number of observations and reflections: mobility has entered a new phase geared towards sustainability and energy efficiency; the development of vehicle engine technologies and electric energy storage is at an advanced stage; the Paris Agreement sets an obligation to improve air quality by reducing CO2, PM and NOx linked to the spread of electric cars; new lifestyles and the increasing awareness of consumers and institutions towards clean energy are consolidating. EV Station is an ESCo operator with EGE certification registered in the special section entitled Startup Innovative of the Bologna Chamber of Commerce. Unlike the combustion engine car, the electric car opens up a range of different and complementary charging options. The concept behind the EV Station project is that we have always been accustomed to refuelling our car at a petrol station and therefore proposes a similar situation for the electric car. We could refer to the project as the “service station 2.0”. Even though EV Station offers latest-generation Superfast Charge columns, columns with very high potential capable of reducing charging times to a minimum, it will still take longer than refuelling the traditional tank, hence the idea of integrating the station with a refreshment and waiting area that recalls the traditional service station rethought in contemporary terms. So the "refreshment" area is rethought as a comfortable waiting space, with courtesy computer equipment, with the possibility of using the charging time not only for the classic "espresso” coffee but also to be able to guarantee the user a certain degree of operational efficiency. The project is a prototype, the first in a series that will be developed according to the electric car market, which is evolving rapidly and represents the heart of the future development of the automotive sector. New locations have already been identified for new stations which, due to the described concept aimed primarily at the business community, are located in urban areas dedicated to work. The project uses a prefabricated reinforced concrete structure, with the walls covered in metal paint. The form and materials represent the desire to identify in an essential and recognisable way the project that will be replicated in future interventions. A form that in its geometric linearity evokes an architecture that stands out from what is traditional in the collective imagination in relation to the function for which it is designed. The lowest part, "fixed" to the ground, is the shell that contains the reception functions, characterised by a large opening that marks access and interaction between the site and the station. The cantilevered canopy covers the recharging area and detaches itself from the ground by pointing upwards, evoking the image of innovation that points towards the future. The sloping roof is 'clad' with photovoltaic panels that are functional for the building's all-electric system, aiming to generate an energy self-sufficient building.
