Dingzha Village is located in the Jiangnan region of southern China. It is a typical environment, with half of the land being mountain and river, and the other half being farms and dwellings. It boasts a thriving industry and fisheries since the year 2000, as well as excellent shipping conditions. In the master planning of the village, only a group of processing houses and water tower of the granary are preserved for reconstruction. The granary was formerly a public gathering place for the neighboring communities to store food, but it was abandoned as time passed and business changed. The building's appearance and functions will be renewed, as well as new mobility circulation and space organization, with the goal of serving as the central public area and communication center. The design first assesses the existing structures on site, demolishes outdated structures, and enhances the physical performance of existing structures by adding new door openings to satisfy the demands of new public activities rather than traditional residential units. The cylinder tower is encircled by a water courtyard as a new centre building, and the grey space created may be used as a cultural exhibition or a location for public communication. The building facade is connected by a hanging stairway made of red weathering steel plates, which not only coonects a group of previously dispersed buildings, but also a three-dimensional activity area. Reasonable and visualized circulation improve space utilization. Industrial prefabricated materials are the least disruptive to the original building façade. The inside of the cylinder tower has its own floating circulation that links to the exterior, echoing the three-dimensional garden of the building façade. The tower's top will be a new floating volume from which guests may enjoy the greatest views. New architectural functions have been included into the structure. The ground level serves as the park's service centre, acting as a public book bar. Office and business space is added to the second to the top floors, and a partial basement is created as a machine room. New materials, design language, and technology are incorporated into the existing structure, causing the old and new to interact, and the past and future to be evident in the park. Another important issue in the project is sustainability and low carbon emissions. Courtyards typologies emphasizing daylight, ventilation and reducing up to 2 degrees the temperature and stress of people living and working in the space. Alleys will be wayfinding and control of wind and heat. The implement of Smart Energy Grid and insulated and passive ventilation systems saves up to 2400t carbon dioxide within the expected year.
