The projects for the extension of the Pianura, Soccavo and Barra cemeteries in Naples are located in areas characterised by significant orographic specificities, with considerable elevation changes and pre-existing artefacts. The extensions have been designed according to these characteristics, accommodating slopes and inclines and limiting the most impactful transformations. In Pianura, the project is organised as an ideal nineteenth-century established continuation of the existing cemetery, envisaging, in addition to the burial grounds and including the area destined for funeral chapels, an enclosed courtyard limited by the burial building and one open towards the existing cemetery on which two large L-shaped buildings face. The building, built in the first part of the project, is similar in shape to the one already constructed in the 1990s and is characterised by light and transparent façades, exploiting the two orientations for the internal treatment of light: the façades are in fact defined by an alternation of solids and voids that become real filter elements between inside and outside. This effect, in contrast with the rigid stereometry of the existing building, has been achieved by means of a pattern of expanded metal grids with a rhomboid mesh of different colours, also useful to encourage adequate ventilation of the interior spaces and an intense play of light. With respect to colour, the choice was made to use the chromatic variations of the "terrosi", i.e. coatings and paints that refer to the primary elements of matter, such as marble, stone and the scale of browns. This allowed the restitution of a harmonious whole for a building in which natural and artificial combine to form a unicum that can be read as a complex system of elements connected by a metaphor. A key element in the composition of the large building is the staircase, whose aerial ramps characterise the corner solution that becomes a large sculpture in concrete and Corten steel that dominates the interior volumetry while remaining visible from the outside through the diaphragm panels of the envelope. The interventions in the three cemeteries include a careful naturalistic design: the gardens of memory become recognisable places identified by the presence of groups of palm trees symbolising the victory of good over evil and at the same time rebirth. In Pianura in particular, the garden finds space between the private burial grounds, in the most secluded place in the cemetery, like a room protected by hedges and walls.

Curriculum

T-studio is a work and research team that draws inspiration from the constant confrontation on shared themes; the group deals with architectural, urban and environmental design; interior design and multimedia graphics. The research activity finds a specific field of interest in the investigation of the complex relationships established between design methodologies and intervention methods in the built and natural environment. The themes are mainly aimed at investigating the connections of urban design and the strategic role of disused and degraded areas. The study of the historical, social and economic dimensions of contexts connects architectural design to the roots of the local habitus. The common objective is to provide a theoretical and applied contribution to the theme of living and inhabiting places in a sustainable manner by considering them as complex systems of relationships and functions from the aesthetic, ethical, social, environmental and technological points of view.
