Location: The project is located in Xiyaotou Village, Yu County, Zhangjiakou City, Hebei Province, which was called "Weizhou" in ancient times. Weizhou is one of the "Sixteen Prefectures of Yanyun". Xiyaotou Village is located in the northwest of Hebei Province, bordering Beijing to the east, Baoding to the south, Datong, Shanxi to the west, and Zhangjiakou to the north. Premise: There are 110 households with 285 people in the village, and each person can only grow some crops such as corn. For many years, the men in the village went out to work, leaving the women and the elderly to stay in the village. At the same time, due to the lack of educational resources in the village, young people can only take their children to study in the county seat. Since then, there are only more than 100 permanent residents in the village, which is a typical hollow village. Invited to Participate: Dplus Studio was invited by a non-profit organization to take one spot to design a guest house . After three years, on top of the ruins, 16 old abandoned houses were renovated into new buildings by designers who are as passionate about rural revitalization as we are. This transformation is not only an update in the physical sense, but also provides a foundation and opportunity for the development and revitalization of other art forms in the countryside, such as paper-cut art and dashuhua art. Attract outsiders who want to come to the village for research or hold activities. With popularity, the village will grow spontaneously. Concept: Different from the natural environment of rivers and lakes in rural areas in southern China, Yu County belongs to the middle temperate sub-arid climate zone, with an average annual temperature of 7°C, an average annual precipitation of about 400mm, and an average annual sunshine of 2800-2950 hours. The climate features are: sufficient sunlight, less rainfall, large temperature difference between day and night, and lack of vegetation resources. Therefore, when designing the guest house, the concept of introverted space came into being, allowing the residents to have a variety of spatial experiences of introspection in the vast mountains. At the same time, in the previous field research, it was found that the design vocabulary of local houses is relatively simple, so the new geometric elements of such a curve hope to give villagers and residents a new experience. Local material selection: In terms of material selection, the local building materials industry was investigated, and bricks were selected as the main material, and then the architectural form was designed. In the end, the brick factory and local construction workers were selected only 15km away from the project location, using the masonry methods they were already familiar with, and the final construction cost was US$134 per square meter. Impression: What we are doing here is actually turning agricultural assets and agricultural resources into assets that can be invested and developed. Guest houses are actually just one of the ways. In recent years, China's development of rural industries and rural economy has become an inevitable option for the country's internal economic cycle. At present, China's building stock can meet the housing needs of 3.7 billion people. However, the seasonal imbalance of urban and rural population makes the urban population density is too high, and the countryside has so many hollow villages. Final feedback: Recently, Liang Xingheng, secretary of the village party branch, said, "The architects of these projects have helped us build so many beautiful houses on the old abandoned homesteads. Even in the city, it is difficult to see them all at once. A large number of foreigners and original residents went home to visit. This is a great gift from the architects, and it has transformed Xiyaotou Village.” Rural revitalization driven by artistic design is a smart dream of contemporary Chinese rural transformation, and the FA Commune in Xiyaotou Village has begun to achive the dream.
