Phoenix breaks through the clouds and dances in the sky:
The Design of United Nations Geospatial Information Management Forum Permanent Site of Deqing County
The project is located in Geographic Information Town, south of Deqing County, Zhejiang Province, China. It is, specifically, between Tashan No.2 Street and Tashan No.3 Street, and across Quyuan Road. The architecture occupies a gross floor area of 72,063 m², with a three-storey main volume and a fire protection height of 23.95 meters.
The architecture was mainly created for holding the United Nations World Geospatial Information Congress and acted as the major venue of the congress. In addition, it also serves the local citizens and meets various functions such as performance, conference and exhibition.
The project takes on an ellipsoid shape, which is consistent with the form of the island where it is located. In this way, the overall architecture matches well with the site environment. The site is located on the east side of Quyuan South Road, along which the secondary entrances are formed. Since the architecture has a good view toward the lake, the main entrance of the site was set up in the lake-facing direction. The architecture consists of the main venue for 2000 people, a grand theater for 1000 people, a multi-functional hall for 500 people, a small lecture hall for 300 people and several conference rooms, small theaters and so on. All the internal halls can be connected to each other through corridors and shared lobbies.
The design used the imagery of a phoenix that breaks through the clouds and dances in the sky. The overall architecture looks like a white glimmering cloud, lying silently on The Phoenix Lake and integrating with the surrounding environment. The three-dimensional and hollowed-out metal roof, looks like a “flying phoenix” that spreads the wings and soars highly, presenting a poetic picture. Featuring simple structural forms, the interior space was endowed with an artistic conception of “woods and shades of bamboos nearby, mountains and flowing waters at distance” through the appropriate integration of local elements.
To ensure the visual effect of the fifth facade, the roof, the architects selected stainless panels as the major material of glass curtain wall on the facade instead of aluminum panels. The surface of the roof was clad in self-cleaning coatings, so as to enhance the durability and self-cleaning ability of the architecture.
The architecture was not equipped with any tube wells that come out of the roof, so ceiling blinds on the ground floor and tube wells on the basement were installed.
The interior space of the architecture was designed to be enveloped by a large-span spherical steel structure, which posed a great structural difficulty and also led to the fire protection problem. Electric opening lights were set up on the roof above the atrium, which was defined as a semi-outdoor safe area. They helped solve the problems of fire protection such as failure to directly access to the outdoors from staircase and failure to set up fire rescue exits at several fire protection zones.
The first United Nations World Geospatial Information Congress was held in Deqing, Zhejiang Province, on 19 November 2018. It was the largest-scale, highest-level and most content-rich geographical information congress once convened by United Nations. The successful congress advanced the development of the global geographical information industries.
