・The project was based on the premise of using local materials. Ezo Pine, a native species of Hokkaido, was selected as the structural material, and the conventional post and beam structure was mainly used. High sidelights were installed on the northeast and southwest sides to provide stable natural lighting throughout the day in an environment surrounded by mid- and high-rise residential buildings. A raised roof is constructed in the shape of a hyperbolic paraboloid (HP) shell.
・The south side of the building is wide open to the marronnier trees. The second floor space where one can feel changes in the scenery and fresh natural light surrounded by the dynamic wood structure of exposed beams and walls with exposed columns.
The first floor is mainly used for meetings with visitors. We aimed to create a new design office that is open to society, with wide openings to the street and large glass partitions that provide a clear view of the interior and exterior, while maintaining an appropriate distance from the surrounding gaze by adding "doma" (earthen floor) as a buffer zone.
We also designed a place where creativity is stimulated surrounded highly pure textures and where the team members can evolve through active communication in the open space. Ezo pines require three years to be sawn from logs. The scrap wood from the process is used as lattice members for exterior walls, instead of being used as furring strips, studs buried inside the walls. In order to inhibit decay by reducing the size of the contact points, they were divided into three layers.
To make the best use of the raw wood and allow visitors to feel the beautiful texture of the local wood, wood components were exposed as much as possible. Ezo pine, one of the representative trees of Hokkaido, was used. The wooden HP shell roof, which captures and reflect the natural scenery of light from morning to afternoon onto the space surrounded by the "forest" of columns, opens up new possibilities for the conventional post and beam structure. We aimed to create a simple and beautiful wooden structure using custom-made hardware.
・Components were designed to be small dimensions, and made by a team of local carpenters who make fittings and furniture and whom we work together with on a regular basis. Taking into account the snow load distributed evenly on the roof surface, the roof is composed of small-sized members into a hyperbolic paraboloid to create a roof surface where the snow load is equally distributed. The second floor atelier features a highly redundant parallel beam structure which is contrasted with the orthogonal joist structure of small-sized members to express the flow of time.
・The eccentric jointing of exposed wall pillars and beams with the beautiful texture of Ezo pine expresses the essence of the conventional post and beam structure. The structure was constructed with simple details that can be fabricated by local carpenters. The atelier, which serves as the base of our creative activities, was successfully completed as a space made of wood where one can feel natural light and trees throughout the seasons and is reminded of the proverb, "study the past to develop new ideas."
・Hot-water pipes are laid on the slab under the floor on the first floor living room, and the warm air which rises due to differences in temperature is diffused into the building through multiple slits in the floor on the first and second floors.
For ventilation, the first floor storage room is used as an air chamber to introduce outside air, which is fed to the subfloor and warmed up. Some of the air is forced out through high sidelights on the northeast and southwest sides and the restrooms on the first floor, and the rest is returned to the first floor storage room as return air.
The HP shell ceiling efficiently draws warm air from the first floor and then directs it downward along the wall surface. As a result, the surface temperature of the rooms on the first and second floors is kept around 18 to 20 ℃, creating a comfortable interior environment even in winter.
The thermal insulation and airtightness of this building is equivalent to the basic level of the Sapporo Next Generation Housing Standard. Since there are many houses with the same level of the external envelope performance, we hope to collect effective data for design and housing support in the future.
