Houses for a House
This project is designed for a large Iranian family, including the parents and Two mature children with spouses. The main design challenge was to bring two generations together. The project site with a total area of over 750 square meters is located in Yazd, one of the central cities of Iran.
Yazd has a hot desert climate which is the driest major city in Iran. The climatic conditions of Yazd city have created an introspective pattern in the structure of residential homes. This structure comprises a set of indoor spaces with different functions around a central open space called the courtyard.
Reinterpreting the introverted model of the traditional Iranian House, this project attempts to adhere to the surrounding context.
Considering the need for independent spaces along with interactive spaces for the family, a set of sub-spaces were created within the house, including private, semi-private, as well as public spaces. In this system, each space works independently while forming a part of a coherent whole.
Following the flexible architectural approach to contemporary architecture as well as the importance of climate architecture, by preserving the climatic criteria contained in the structural pattern of Yazd's houses, the sub-spaces considered for this design through open spaces (shrinking central courtyard) as well as semi open spaces are interconnected.
Considering the limitations on the east and west sides of the site, the sub-spaces were situated carefully to optimize sunlight exposure. Distinct distances between the spaces and fluidity of the green spaces separating them, not only bring light and view to the spaces, but also provide privacy to each space. Forming semi open spaces, the boundaries play an important role in enhancing the spatial quality of the house. Using of the arch as one of the elements of Iranian architecture in the open spaces between the sub-spaces besides creating shades and providing thermal comfort determines the path and openings of the passage.
The spatial variability created by the sub spaces and the bridges connecting them has transformed the regular residential typology to maximize the integration of indoor and outdoor spaces.
The presence of green spaces between indoor spaces increase the quality of life and forms diverse spatial experiences. The use of flexible architecture which combines fixed and variable spaces provides residents with easy access to open spaces and increases sense of belonging.
Khashayar Abdolhamidi was born in Tehran, Iran in 1992. He completed his bachelor’s degree at the Azad University of Tehran, where he graduated in 2014. In 2018 Khashayar established his own firm, HES Architecture Studio, in Tehran. As founder of HES, Khashayar focuses his design strategies and research on geographically context-based architecture and the impact of geography on architecture. His architectural style is easy to read and formed from very clear lines, yet he explores to break endless limits of synthesizing fills and voids to create high quality architectural forms and spaces.
